St. Martin at Christmas

I am thinking about a trip to St. Martin at the Christmas holiday. I anyone has done this before and could let me know whether most restaurants and bars are open on Christmas day and Boxing Day I would appreciate it. Also any tips on things to do down there are very appreciated.

We've traveled to St. Martin last year just prior to Thanksgiving. It appeared that even in the islands, their holidays were similar to the states. We stayed on the French side of the island but had use of a rental car the entire time we were there. We loved Sunset beach at sunset. A fun place to watch jets land and take off. The food is wonderful. Make sure you try Talk of The Town a locally owned little BBQ place, there is also a nice italian place close to one of the casinos the locals can tell you the name because it is popular with them. Snorkeling is not a good on St. Martin as it is on some of the other islands but the beaches are great. Shopping in Maho is good.

Maho? Did you mean Marigot?

you will find most businesses closed those days, though some restaurants & bars are open. the tourists have to eat somewhere!

OT...Maho is near Princess Juliana Airport on the Dutch side. Marigot is the capital of the French side.

I have not been to SXM at Christmas, but I would imagine it's the same as other islands nearby, which I am familiar with on Christmas and Boxing Day. Tourism is the main industry so, as wenkranz said, most restaurants and bars will probably be open. Stores, however, will not.

Thanks, Statia, Maho is unfamiliar to me.

The shops in Marigot are open on Boxing Day, we come over from Anguilla that day, great day to shop, and nearly empty ferries.

No problem, OT. Do you live on Anguilla? If so, then Maho is the beach you fly over when landing.

No, not living on Anguilla, only there for our winter vacation, mid December -early January, 3 - 4 weeks depending on the school calendar.

In a couple of years we hope we will be able to spend 3 - 4 months there.

Oh, I see. Well, if your future plans work out, we'll be "neighbors" during your winter sojourn. Good luck with it.
