St. Maarten Safety
 

Leaving in a week and staying in a villa on the Dutch side. You can't help but get a little apprehensive when reading some of the crime posts and police reports via local newspapers. Police response portrayed as being slow and ineffective. some of those posts are dated.
Please share your recent and hopefully positive experience while there and your feeling of security.

FWIW, if you exercise normal precautions, generally speaking, you will be fine. I stay on the French side, in the village of Grand Case, and I've only experienced a bit of discomfort when walking back from dinner -- more from the traffic on the main road than from any particular human menace. However, on my last visit (November), the Grand Case local hotels added an on-demand shuttle for their guests, so even that concern was obviated.

Been awhile but our one day spent on both sides was enjoyable. This was a cruise stop. Yes, just be careful, stay in groups, avoid late evening strolls. etc. And use hotel shuttles.

Thanks Ozarksbill. Glad you enjoyed you time there. We leave in 2 sleeps and plan on letting our hair down while keeping our wits about us. Appreciate the feedback.

Been there multiple times and never had a problem.
Use good sense, be aware of your surroundings, and don't look for trouble.
Don't go to secluded and empty beaches and areas.
Don,t flash your toy's or $, and don't brag.
Try not to dress and act like a tourist, so you don't stand out.
Don't leave any valuables anywhere in your car.
The locals know who's driving the Rental Cars... Just something to think about..

These are safety principles one should use anywhere!
