St. Maarten Information

Anyone know anything about the Royal Resort in St. Maarten on the Dutch side. It used to be called Pelican Bay or something like that. It is located in Simpson Bay. Looks pretty but want as much info as possible. We were in St. Maarten 23 years ago - know much has changed. Love the Royal Resorts in Cancun but it might be nice to try a change.

We are going to St. Maarten next week. WE have never been and are anxious to hear comments about the island. We are staying at Mt. Vernon. How casual is the island at night.

Quite casual, Penny. You can dress casual to go out to dinner at night. Maybe a nice sundress or something similar. I even see people wearing shorts, but I feel better at least casually "dressed."

Susan, I am not sure if you mean Pelican Resort (it's in Simpson Bay). I haven't heard of Pelican changing names, but it's very possible. I know of people who have stayed there and liked it, but I haven't stayed myself.

I would also imagine that St. Maarten has become MUCH busier in the past 23 years, but if you liked it the first time, I'm sure you will like it again.

Have fun.
I don't think that the Pelican has changed names. There's a place called the Royal Palm that is near the Pelican. It's not bad, but I don't think that it's affiliated with the Royal Resorts that you are talking about. It's a Sunterra resort. There's another Sunterra Resort right next to the Pelican called the Flamingo Beach. In my opinion, it's nicer than the Pelican or Royal Palm.

Susan: the only Pelican I know of is the Pelican Resort; toured it once to see what a timeshare was like. It was nice but we prefer the French side over th Dutch.

Penny: Advice given is correct; people dress "casual smart" in the evening. You do see shorts and t-shirts but I feel best wearing a smart pair of black pants , loose shirt or a nice tucked-in white T with a jean jacket. Linen pants or dresses also look smart. And men don't need jacket and tie for the restaurants.
