Which area of St. Lucia is the best for beaches and close proximity to other attractions. I realize that this may be an open ended question. Thanks for all the help.

What is your definition of a best beach? In the south of the island the sand is darker and water is emerald colour whereas in the north the sand is lighter. I find dark sand beaches quite beautiful, others do not. I don't know what you mean by attractions, unless you can call the Pitons an attraction. They are in the south, near the volcano and botanical gardens.

To actually answer your question, the areas around Rodney Bay, Castries, and Pidgeon Island National Park will have the "better" beaches and closer to dining and shopping options. However, the Island is very spread out with lots of just scenery in between. If your are looking to be centrally located, hotels in those areas will work. You'll probably still need a taxi, rental car or take a guided tour to get to many atrractions off the resorts.

The Land and Sea and the Jeep Jungle tours are great excursions to see most of the Island.

We stayed at this hotel when it was Almond Morgan, the hotel was very nice and probably better now it has been taken over. But I was not keen on the beach, the water was not the best, it was not clear. It did not matter for us since we had a rental car and spent most time elsewhere, but it might matter for you. I'd go for a hotel on Reduit Beach or in the south on one of the dark sand beaches which has crystal clear water.

Your best best is to go over to Trip Advisor and read the reviews and view consumer pictures of the hotels that you are interested in. Just try to "read between the lines" as best you can.
