St Kitts or St Thomas
Haven't researched yet, but may make a trip to St Kitts or St. Thomas in Feb 2004. Any comments on major distinctions between islands, activities, crowds, etc to help me make a fast decision.
|
Wow! Those are two very different islands. St. Thomas is very commercialized with large resorts, cruise ships and American fast food restaurants. St. Kitts is very underdeveloped with only one large resort (a Marriott with 900 rooms recently opened there) and practically no chain restaurants or American businesses (I believe there is one KFC in the downtown area). St. Thomas will be a lot more crowded, but will have more nightlife, shopping, etc. St. Kitts is much more quiet and relaxed.

What about water activities (including scuba) and other activities? Comparable, or different between the two islands?

Most water sports are available at both islands. But, there is no comparison between the selection of outfitters in St. Thomas vs. St. Kitts. If you want to dive in St. Thomas, there are dozens of operators to choose from. In St. Kitts, there are just a handfull. Also, with the proximity of St. Thomas to the BVI's and other USVI's, the choices for dive sites would most likely be greater than in St. Kitts.
Or, another thought - Have you considered staying on St. John instead of St. Thomas? That might be a good compromise for you. You would be a quick ferry ride from St. Thomas and there are plenty of water sports available, but St. John does not have all of the crowds and commercialization found in St. Thomas. |
Also, for more information on St. Thomas and the other USVI's:

The beaches and the dramatic scenery are obvious reasons for St. Thomas's popularity. There are other equally significant reasons for going. Many activities and a good nightlife among them.

Janepaul is right. I've been to both islands and their atmosphere is completely different. St. Thomas is gorgeous but incredibly busy. St. Kitts is gorgeous but quiet.
Only you can decide what's best for your holiday. Both are great places. For myself, it's St. Kitts that I return to again and again. |
