St Kitts or Nevis?

Hi All,

We are interested in both islands, but am looking for some feedback from others - I am not concerned about the beaches as we live in Florida and are getting married in St. John-

We would like to hike, bike, explore - Can you give any suggestions on either island? Stay on one and ferry to the other? Pros and cons of both?

Any hotel recommendations?

Thanks in advance,

Stacey

Nevis is one of my favorite Caribbean islands. (Also love Anguilla we got married there and enjoy the Virgin Islands) The Nevisians are the nicest people (I only changed planes in St. Kitts there I felt the people had a bad attitude). Exploring Nevis truly exudes the West Indies flavor and culture. Hike the mountain trails and see if you can spot the Green monkies.
The Four Seasons is outstanding. Many of the resorts on the island are lovely.
Have a great wedding!

Glad to hear more about Nevis. My husband and I are visiting this fall (after an exhaustive Caribbean search) and have heard great things.

We had a great time at the Golden Rock Estates on Nevis, situated at the beginning trails to the volcanic mountain top. I made friend with the Green Monkeys, and they began following me around the trails, high up in the canopies. Now and then, one would throw a mango fruit at me, but our relationship was basically OK. Definately rent a jeep and travel around the island several times. Hope you like wild donkeys, and lots of sheep and goats, they roam everywhere, unattended. The beginning trail at the Golden Rock is where the monkeys hang out, so take the short trail, slowly and peer up into the canopy; they'll be watching you before you seen them. In the early morning, they come down and roam the hiking trail itself, so if you go quietly, you'll definately see them around 7 or 8 am. The trails up into the volcano can be dangerous after a rain, and are very slippery. I would highly recommend going with someone who has hiked to the top before. If you go alone, definately pay attention to the warnings. Some of the ravines are steep and people have been hurt slipping on the wet canopy floor and cascading down into them. Robert

Stacey: Last year I went to St. Kitts and took a day trip to Nevis. Both islands are great. I wish I could have spent more time on Nevis (and hope to go back someday). Nevis is smaller, less resort-oriented and more "exclusive". St. Kitts has more hotels and restaurants to choose from. The beaches on St. Kitts are less developed and less manicured. Both islands offer good opportunity for hiking and exploring. In terms of pros and cons, Nevis is more expensive than St. Kitts. Other than that, they both have their charms. I think what will determine it for you is budget, interests, and personal taste. I think for overall style and ambience, Nevis would edge out St. Kitts.
