St. Kitts and Nevis...need hotel help.

We are going to St. Kitts for 4 days and Nevis for 4 days. I am debating between Golden Lemon and Ottleys Plantation on St. Kitts....anyone have a suggestion on which place would be better to stay at? The draw to Golden Lemon was that it was on the water but Ottleys looked nicer.

We enjoyed the Golden Rock on Nevis. A very down-to-earth place with great cuisine, and at the base of the mountain where the trails begin. Robert

I know that you stated Golden "Lemon"; although I've never heard of it, the name reminded me of the Golden "Rock" in on Nevis. It has a nice website, if you tap into Yahoo search engine. Robert

Both Ottley's and Golden Lemon are very nice places to stay. They are fairly comparable as to the "quality" of the rooms (they are very tastefully decorated), the friendliness of the staff, amenities, etc. Golden Lemon is the slightly smaller resort and it is located on a small dark sand beach at the north end of the island near Dieppe Bay, where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic. Ottley's is on the hillside about about 20 minute drive from Basseterre. It is in a beautiful garden setting. Both are very well run resorts and are small enough to give you very persoalized service and the food is excellent at both places. Choose the Golden Lemon if having a beach nearby is important to you. Select Ottley's if you would prefer a mountainside location. You should plan on having a rental car or big taxi budget regardless of which ofthese resorts you pick as they are both far from "everything".

Thank you Sunnyboy...since you say they are both far from everything, is there a hotel that you would recommend that is more centrally located?

Robert thank you too, I will check out the Golden Rock since I have not booked Nevis yet either.

Have you considered the Marriott? I know it's a chain and will lack the island charm of Golden Lemon or Ottleys, but it gets very favorable reviews on www.tripadvisor.com. In fact, I'm considering a trip to SKB and a stay at the Marriott. Depending on when you're going, the Marriott offers some pretty enticing rates. You might want to visit the Marriott website and check out the resort.

Thanks, I did consider the Marriott but we thought is was just too big of a hotel when we really want quaint and charming....its not ruled out yet since it does seem to cover everything we wanted regarding the beach, tennis etc...

If you book in at Golden Rock, bring some peanuts for Pam's parrot, which will spy on you whilst showering. Also, the monkeys from the forest will come visit you in the early morn, so don't leave food out on the porch. Oh, often a local band of wild donkeys will hee haw from the forest and awake you at sunrise. That's if, of course, they haven't found a way through the fence and are at your front door. Robert

We stayed at the Timothy Beach Resort, which is on the Caribbean side across from Marriott area - thought the Marriott simply did not fit the area, a little too much for a quiet island like St. Kitts. But the goal there is to attract tourists and I think the majority of tourists prefer places where name recognition is helpful. We wouldn't have chosen it, but to each their own.

inthechips; We rented a car and visited Timothy Beach Resort. Nice beach and grounds...has soul. I ran into a woman marine biologist on Nevis, who does a combination "hands-on" teachings of reef creatures, followed by snorkeling expeditions. Was she based out of Timothy Beach, or somewhere else? Did you run into her, and do you remember her name and the operation she runs? Robert

I have no idea Robert. That doesn't sound like anyone we met.

We found the TBR to be quiet and low key, not posh by any means but more than comfortable, and a great location. We became Monkey Bar regulars at sunset!

Robert Jan 1st, 2005 05:22 PM

I snorkeled off the Monkey Bar along the shore by the rock formations. I really dug the bar, too. Friendly staff and accomodating. Great drinks...I forgot the mixed cocktail I had, but after two, I duck walked back to the car. Felt like I gulped down a bottle of stomach relaxers. There was a local feral dog puppy with one leg missing that kept begging. It was a cute pup; I gave it half the food I ordered. But...unbelievable, on the way home, a tourist had adopted the dog and was carting it on carry on luggage on the Beef Island/Puerto Rico loup back to the states!!! Probably staying in a posh condo in Manhatten. The lady marine biologist must have been at another resort area, maybe around Qualie Bay. Robert

You must be referring to Under the Sea in Nevis. www.undertheseanevis.com

I have to say, that we were pleasantly surprised by the Marriott. It was large, but we felt very alone and there is a lot to do. Definitely plan on some time at Turtle Beach Bar and Grill. We also liked Marshalls. I thought Stonewalls was ok...not a tremendous menu choice. My DH loved it, so take it for what it's worth. In Nevis we loved the restaurant at Oualie Beach. Wonderful!! Ask for Chef Jason and he will hook you up. Have fun!!

Hello MLF! If you you are going to St. Kitts I would recommend the ST. KITTS MARRIOTT AND BEACH CLUB CASINO resort. Great place and great rates.
