St Kitts & Irma

My daughter who lives in St Kitts is fortunately in another country on a trip. At this point several people are taking shelter in her home, which is pretty high and away from the shore. Some people were already there taking care of her pets, but others have joined them. Of course, DD is very worried for all her friends there. ROAMSAROUND, are you on St Kitts now or did you evacuate? If you are there and still have power, how are things looking there?

On Nevis - right now it's windy with intermittent showers - nothing major yet. Latest (8PM) tracking shows Irma is 85 miles east of Antigua putting it about 125 miles from Nevis and moving at 15 mph so another couple hours before the island starts feeling the effects with peak early tomorrow morning. It looks like the core (where the worst winds are) will turn slightly to the west-northwest over the next couple hours passing to the northeast of both St. Kitts & Nevis. Time will tell what actually happens.

Heard there are some sporadic power outages around the island but right now we have power.

Thank you. I hope you are all able to shelter away from shore areas, and it passes quickly and as far away from center as possible. Thank you again for posting.

How are you doing?

Morning Report -

Storm passed north of island so wasn't as bad as originally feared.

Island wide power outage since last night but we have a generator so were fine. Phones & Internet OK.

During the night we had intermittent rain but nothing to prolonged or too heavy.

Gusty winds helped "prune" dead branches, palm fronds and leaves from trees but nothing major that we can see.

Sea is rough in the channel between Nevis and St. Kitts.

All in all our side of island faired pretty well. Haven't been on other side of island so can't comment on conditions there.

Looks like the island dodged a bullet.

TS Jose which is following close behind looks to be turning northward so hopefully that too will miss us.

RoamsAround, thank you so much. We never meet most others who post on Fodors, but from your generous posts and your location, I feel I know you a little bit and am very glad you are safe through this storm.
