St. John's Honeymoon

After two weeks of scouring the msg. boards here and doing tons of research, my fiance and I have decided to not worry about the possiblity of a hurricane and brave the caribbean.

I pretty much have decided on St. John's based in large part of what I ahve read on this board. At this point Caneel Bay seems like the front runner (although it is a little pricey), but I am somewhat intrigued by the idea of renting a vila though.

Does anyone knwo of a villa that would not require a car rental to be practical? I would ideally like a villa that has a pool, is within a walk to the beach, nice view (they all seem to have this) and close to some restaurants. This mythical villa is about the only thing that would persuade me to not go the Caneel Bay route.

Thanks in advance for you help.

Hello Nolan:

My husband and family have been to St John and St. Thomas twice now and are going again in June. We simply love St. John because of the island being 2/3 national park. Anyway, we have found this time around that renting a villa is the way to go. We are staying two weeks this time and can't wait. There are so many villas to choose from, it will actually be hard to decide. When you are going will have something to do with what is available. If you go to Google.com and search for St. John villas, pages will come up.
We are staying at the Cari-beana, which is operated by the Kathy McLaughlin.
http://island-getaways.net/index.html#1
Take a look, she may have what you need.
The Cruz Bay area is where the most stores/restaurants, etc. are and there are some villas close enough to walk into town. I know ours is.

Also we stayed at Gallows Point, which is beautiful. Also close enough to walk intow Cruz Bay. We had a loft unit that was fantastic. I think we booked that through Fun Jet or Apple Vacations.
Hope this has helped. Have Fun!

Thanks. We will be going in Sept. (with our fingers crossed), so I think we should be able to find a place. Is a villa near Cruz Bay what I should be looking for if I want to be able to walk into town fairly easily?

In St. John, there is the East End and the West End of the island, (Cruz Bay and Coral Bay). The island is only about 9 miles long and 5 miles wide.
Cruz Bay is where most of your stores and things are. Depending on what type of Honeymoon and how much privacy you want are your personal choices, such as, maid services, restaurant in the hotel, etc.
We are the type of people that like privacy and when we don't we venture out to look elsehwere. All the beaches can be reached by there open taxis services. We are taking our 8 year daughter and Mother with us in June.
Let me know if I can be of anymore help. Take Care.
Hi, we are leaving for st. john on the 24th and are staying at the Serindipity apt./condos, I found it at the st-john.com web site. There are a lot of villas with pictures availlable at that site, good luck...

Trust me and just about every poster on this board,on this one-----RENT A JEEP----No matter where you stay. It will be one of your favorite things because you will want to see the different beaches and it's just plain fun. As for your mythical villa, it is, because the beach you'll want to go to will not be near a villa, that's near a restaurant. But if you have a jeep.......

I think I am definitely leaning towards a villa now. Caneel Bay (even in Sept.) is just outrageous. I also think I can give on the whole beach thing (the views should make up for it, right?) and go the Jeep route.

We would like to do 9 nights/10days. I am thinking maybe a villa for a week and a couple of nights in a hotel, unless villas let you stay odd times (we are going in Sept...), or cross weeks.

What should be a reasonable budget for food?
How much do drinks generaly run?

Thanks to all so far and in advance for any additional help!
I will be visiting St. John for the first time in October/November and will be renting a villa. I'll be staying 10 days and all the agents I've spoken to will accommodate me. I wouldn't dream of staying in a hotel when I can stay in a villa!

As for food and drink prices, it does tend to get expensive if you are eating/drinking out all the time. I've taken food on other island vacations and that has worked out great for us. We typically have breakfast at the villa and lunch and dinner we alternate.

The food items to bring are: frozen juice, steaks and other meats, boxed rice, canned tuna. A small cooler should do it for 2.

Hope this helps; you'll have a great time!

Deb
