St. John USVI honeymoon - August '09

Seeking an inexpensive-moderate price, beachfront, relaxed, secluded/uncrowded place to honeymoon, 2nd week of August. Other advice for a first trip to St. John's welcome.

Inexpensive/secluded/beachfront don't really mesh on St. John.

Check out Gallows Point Resort (www.gallowspointresort.com) - it's the closest you'll come to meeting your requirements. Everything else is UP from there.

I wouldn't count out Caneel Bay. While on the expensive side, in the Summer they generally offer great deals that can save you money. I LOVE this place: http://www.caneelbay.com/specialoffers.cfm

Thank you. I checked out www.homeaway.com and www.vrbo.com, and both seem to have a number of attractive and even more modestly priced places to stay. But virtually none other than perhaps the Westin are really beachfront. Is that because of the summer storm possibilities?

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials!!

The below is def "inexpensive-moderate price, beachfront, relaxed, secluded/uncrowded." Surely not everyones idea of the perfect honeymoon spot but I think its pretty cool!

Caneel and The Westin are really the only beachfront properties on St. John. I think some of the reason has to do with the terrain - which is very hilly. Some of the mountaintop villas/hotels, while not on the beach, have the most gorgeous views you'll ever see!

If you are going in the summer you should be able to get good rates on places to stay. I would look into Caneel for sure - I've never stayed, but it's supposed to be gorgeous.
We stayed at the Estate Lindholm which is a small inn just up the hill from Cruz Bay. It was very nice - not 5star luxurious - but very nice.

Caneel fits what you are looking for exactly...except for the cost. It's worth it though! Check to see if they still have rooms available under their summer offer.

If your on a tight budget the least expensive place to stay on St John is Maho Bay Campgrounds. You do not need a tent as they have prefab tent like buildings you stay in.

Inexpensive or affordable is relative. If you can swing it, try looking at a place called "Siempre Azul" which is on the water and fairly secluded and all the way out in the southeast end of the island. Or you can look at Estate Zootenvaal which is out on the east end. It would help to give a price range and a few more specific details so folks have a better idea what to suggest.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful responses! (More are still welcome, of course.)

Thank you all. We have decided upon Caneel Bay. I'll post a report when we return.
