St. John taxi question
 

Hello.....we are arriving very late in the afternoon in St. John. I reserved my car rental for the following morning thinking we could just take a taxi to our villa and then another out to dinner and back. The taxi scheduled rates say it costs $6.00 PP for a taxi from Chocolate Hole to Cruz Bay. Could that be right? If it is going to cost $50.00 round trip for a cab ride to dinner and back (there are 4 of us) , I guess we should just get the car right when we hit town....I was thinking that Cruz Bay was only about 10 minutes away from our villa. Anyone use a taxi in that area? Thanks for your help.....Lori

I can't quote specific taxi rates St. John (it's been a couple of years since I've been there) but my experience travelling the Caribbean (which I do often) has been if you take 2 or 3 r/t cab rides in one day you'll find that with gratuities you'll end up spending close to same amount as a rental car. Moral, forget the taxi - get the rental car, you'll be glad you did.

Agree with A Traveller, especially since you arrive late afternoon. You're lucky, as many car rental places there close by early evening.

Itilson - Have you checked with he villa rental company? Whenever we go to STJ, they pick us up at the ferry dock and transport us to the villa we have reserved. You may want to call and ask if they will do that for the four of you before you go. Have a fantastic trip.

Thanks for the info...I will ask the realty company for a lift if we can't get the car until the following morning. I don't know why I care with all the other expenses we will be incurring, but I just thought $25.00 for a ride into town sounded like a lot!

The ferry landing in St. John can be somewhat of a zoo, and a little confusing to 1st time visitors. As you get off the ferry there will be a group of 5-6 open air taxis and a taxi director asking you where you want to go.

Taxis on St. John are F250 pickup truck chasis with 4-5 rows of seats in the back where the bed used to be. There's a cover over the top.

Tell the taxi director where you are going to, he'll direct the 4 of you into one of the cabs, maybe with others, maybe not. Once the taxi fills up or all the passengers are off the ferry, off you go. Don't be concerned that this is rogue, unauthorized taxis - this is the system on St. John and it's all perfectly fine.
