St. John or Virgin Gorda - May
 

Hello happy travelers,

My wife and I need to get out of Dodge. Would you suggest St. John or Virgin Gorda? And can you travel from one to the other easily - how far?

Looking for snorkling, great restaurants, scenery and sailing trips or day trips and such.

We are staying on both of those islands for our honeymoon in September. I'm not quite sure of how we're traveling between the two as of yet. We might take a small plane out of St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda and then Ferry back to St. John. I think combining the two islands is going to be fairly easey to do, although we will lose a day in transit. It's worth it to us though, because we couldn't decide what we wanted more!

I would stay on St John and take a day trip to Vigin Gorda...we are doing that in June.I cannot wait!! =)

It should only be a short trip between the two. :p

Nathan - they are both beautiful.

St John - very lush, green, great snorkling, beautiful beaches, lots of shops, restaurants, some night life.

Virgin Gorda - arid, dry, not as green, beautiful beaches, some with huge boulders, great restaurants (but not as many restaurants as St John) no shopping to speak of. Much less populated and quieter than St John.

You can fly from St Thomas to Virgin Gorda. The ferry from St John is easier, but it does not run every day. Tues, Thurs and Sat. It takes about 2.5 hours. Its a beautiful trip and its just fun to be out on the water. Its not usually rough. I have flown and taken the ferry many many times.

What type of accommodation are you looking for? There are great hotels and rental homes on both islands.

Thank you to everyone who responded. I thought it would be rude not to inform everyone that I have chosen St. Maarten this time around. St. John is still certainly high on my list, but I thought having a Dutch and French side, lots of shopping for my wife, and easy day trips to St. Barth's and Anguilla too good to pass up. Also, I have been to St. Thomas and was looking for something a little different (although St. John sounds great).
