Been to and loved both, but very different. Go to Kauai if you're searching for:

Great spas, impressive resorts and incredible swimming pools (stayed at the Grand Hyatt, which was gorgeous, had the most wonderful spa and meandering pool area)

Pretty good restaurants (enjoy Maui or Honolulu restaurants better)

Great day-trips and hiking to the North Coast, secret beach, Na Pali Coast boat trip, Waimea Canyon, lunch at Princeville Resort.

Hawaiian music and hula dancers!

Go to St. John's if you're searching for:

Great beaches (Hawksnest and Oppenheimer are my favorites)

Beautiful, blue, warm ocean that I can never bear to leave!

Good, but casual dinners

Villa rental - best way to go on St. John. Was not impressed with Caneel Bay or Westin, but loved rening a private villa, stocking it with nice wine and rum drinks, cooking 2 or 3 of our dinners in, jerk-spice chicken legs and burgers for lunch every day, sunning in the nude and our own private plunge pool.

Day trips to other islands - very fun and great scenery!
