St. John car rental question, again
 

We'd like to make car reservations on St. John via the internet, if poss. However, I've read somewhere not all agencies will let you leave the island w/their car. We want to be able to go to St. Thomas a couple of times. What is the best agency to contact on St. John ? Also, we most likely are going to rent a regular car, not a jeep.<BR>Advise please. Thank you.

We've been to St. John's several times and no one will allow you to take a rented car across on the ferry. You can rent a car for a day, though, many of the car rental places have reciprocal agreeements (But you will pay extra for renting the car on the other island). Frankly, you don't really need a car for a visit to St. Thomas. Many taxis are waiting on the other side to take you anywhere you choose to go - even if it's a tour of the island. You can arrange for them to drop you off and pick you up at a given time - they're very accommodating in the islands. Have a wonderful time - St. John's is my favorite!

Are you saying that no 'St.John' car agency will let you take their car over to St. Thomas? -- because others have written the opposite, however, they must have been referring to car agencies on <BR>'St. Thomas'. It seems 'St.Thomas' agencies are more flexible. <BR>Is that right ?<BR>It would be too bad to pay for a car and not be able to take it over to the other island; to pay for transportation on the other island and have your rented car sit in the parking lot elsewhere.

If renting on St. John, you cannot take the vehicle off island. If renting on St.Thomas three agencies (Budget, Discount and Dependable - only some of Dependables vehicles) can be taken on the barge to St. John. Option is to rent on St. Thomas and take the car and then return at will. Regular car should do fine just be careful if it is raining as roads can be slippery and use the horn on the tite hairpin curves (and listen for 'em especially if its a big truck), watch for "wildlife" and pull over if a local wants to get by. They do beep horns in greeting so don't be distracted by horn blowing!
