St john

My fiance and I will be honeymooning in St John in December and we're not sure what to do. Can anyone give us advice on where to eat, what to do, and where to rent a car. Also, we are planning on taking a day trip to BVI, is there a certain place we should go or a certain company to use?

Go to www.usvi-on-line.com where you'll find all the information you probably need. Check out the Travel Forum on the same site after you've done the basic research and you'll find more first-hand info from fellowt travelers in the archives and in the current questions and answers. Good luck!

"Resident" is correct. The website he gave you is USVI dedicated and your questions have been asked and answered many times.

This will be our 7th trip (it has become an annual thing) to STJ this Nov/Dec. So, we will be there the same timeframe as you. Lovely weather, warm, crystal clear waters and a bit of a lull in the season unless you are going Christmas week.

Just a few of our fav restaurants:

Stone Terrace (our favorite in CB)
Chateau Bordeaux
Fish Trap
Morgan's Mango

We rented a vehicle from Denzil Clyne our first 6 years, but went through St. John Car rental last year and feel they have nicer vehicles and a much friendlier staff.

All 52 beaches are wonderful; some certainly easier to access than others. A couple of our favorites are Jumbie and Honeymoon. There's always lovely Trunk, much too crowded most days, however, Hawksnest, Cinnamon, Francis just to name a few.

Our favorite day trip is over to Jost Van Dyke and lovely White Bay where you can find the famous or infamous Soggy Dollar Bar as well as Foxie's. Both are fun and White Bay is one of the prettiest beaches you can ever happen upon. A trip to Virgin Gorda and The Baths is exceptional as is the snorkeling, but the snorkeling is unbeatable in the Virgins. We have rented our own boats and/or hire a captain and spend the day doing and going where we want to. We've done this on our own or with the group of 6 when we travel with friends and family. This works for us, but please do check out the website mentioned. Others can provide better info on the day trip than I can.

You will absolutely love St. John esp. for a Honeymoon - so romantic. We had just about given up on the Caribbean until we "discovered" this little jewel of an isle.

jesswegma,

love fish trap, morgans m. and i would add Asolare---pricey/asian and carib. influenced but really nice setting and food. Also, skinny legs for a good burger--a beach bar to not be missed.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding.
We were in St. John in June and LOVED eating at "Paradiso". It's a beautiful, very romantic restaurant located in the very small shopping center of St. John called Mongoose Junction. The food was fantastic.
We rented a jeep from the rental agency at the Westin. They had better rates than Hertz. We didn't really investigate other car rentals so I don't know if we could have gotten better rates. We had no problems with that rental agency.
Besides hitting all the incredible beaches and eating, we didn't do anything else so I can't offer you much other information on what to do.

I was there w/my husband in July. Here are my picks . . .

Dining: Chateau Bordeaux, Lime Inn, Island Blues, Shipwreck Landing, Skinny Legs, Pickles Deli (for picnics)

To Do: Rams Head Hike, Blue Cobblestone Beach, Salt Pond Bay & Waterlemon for snorkeling, Brown Beach hike (had the beach to ourselves)

Car Rental: Conrad Sutton

Day Trip: We took Stormy Petrel/Pirates Penny (booked through bookitvi.com) to the Baths (very cool), had lunch on Cooper Island, then snorkeled Peter Island - a great day!

Have a wonderful time - St John is incredible!!!

I Just left a trip report on Caneel Bay St. John, maybe some of it can help you, where are you staying?

I've rented from Penn's Jeep Rental (340-776-6530) maybe six times. I really like them. Very good service, abundant parking which you can use whenever you're in Cruz Bay (a big plus), and just good people. Very low key: It seems that at least half of my rentals have started on a day when they were closed. No problem. They'll leave the keys in the glove box and your name on the vehicle. Come back tomorrow when you get chance to settle up.

Get a copy of Gerald Singer's, St. John: Off the Beaten Path. You can get it from Amazon. It's (in my opinion) hands-down the best guide book for hikes and beaches.

Best hike: Reef Bay trail, down AND UP. Make sure you've got a cooler with iced beer in the back of your jeep. After the hike back up, I assure you it will be the best tasting beer you've ever had. Then drive up the road a short way for a lobster roll and another beer (roadside stand just a little east of the trail head).

Do you have accomodations yet? You can't beat a villa rental for privacy, freedom, your own pool, some flexiblity in preparing your own meals, etc.

Excellent snorkelling at Waterlemon Cay. Salt Pond can be a good place to see sea turtles.

Have fun!
