St. John
 

We will be heading to St. John next week and staying in a villa. Our villa has a nice kitchen and we plan to cook in a few nights. Are there any good grocery stores or specialty stores that stock fresh seafood?

Based on my limited experience (we were there last week) - No! Starfish Mkt is supposed to be the best market but there seafood/fish looked pathetic - no better than what we find here in Ohio. We did meet a family that was there for the month whose rental agents put them in touch w/a local man who delivered fresh fish right to their villa. You might want to ask some locals about this when you arrive.

My husband and I have stayed in a villa the last 2 years. We always cook. We bring a large softside cooler with things we think are expensive. We freeze everything (steaks, chicken, chops, butter, etc and pack cheese, lunch meat, and other refrig stuff) We only buy the necessities on St John (milk, eggs, etc). We also bring a suitcase of dry goods (coffee, sugar, condiments) I spent over $110 at Starfish on dairy stuff, fruit, bread, eggs and snacks)But we also stayed for 10 days. If you are staying in Coral Bay there is a fish guy who sells fish near Crabby's if you can catch him.

There is no fresh sea food on St John which I found hard to believe but it's true. There is no commercial fishing on the island. Everything is flown in.

There certainly is. Just ask. Fishermen bring in fresh catches everyday. Just ask around. Now there are some very popular restaurant type fish that is flown in and there are things like shrimp, mussels, oysters and clams that have to be, as they are not indigenous!
