St. Croix restaurant recommendations?
 

We are going to St. Croix and staying at the Buccaneer. Any restaurant recommendations for dinner would be much appreciated. Also, should we plan to rent a car or just take cabs?

Definitely rent a car. St. Croix is a fantastic island to drive around. Restaurants to hit are Bacchus, Duggan’s Reef & Kendrick’s.

Lucky you. Love STX and the Buccaneer. Might be easiest to just do a search on "St. Croix Restaurants" and look for my last trip report title "STX Trip Report - February 2006".

As to the rental car question, different folks will tell you different things. We prefer the cab route and just rent a car for a day or two when we are there each year to do some island touring. My husband and I like to enjoy island cocktails and/or wine while dining out and find that it's safer to use the cabs than to drive. They are very convenient (even come back to pick you up when you call them) and will probably cost you about $30 round trip (you pay by the number of people). But if you don't drink and you plan to leave the resort often, you might want to rent a car.

We are heading to the Buccaneer for the first time this Feb. Our first time on St. Croix. Because of your "travel talk" name, I wonder if you know of any good fishing down there? My husband and I like fly and light tackle inshore fishing. Any advice is welcome! Thanks!

Grew up on st.croix and am a big restaurant-goer!!!!!! St.Tropez in Frederiksted is a fabulous french restaurant. Go for lunch, and meander streets of old fredriksted.

Villa Madeleine is a great location. beautiful view of buck island and east end. a little pricey. maybe go for brunch.

Junies bar. I think she hails from montserrat. Not an atmosphere location. Strictly for the food. Amazing conch and butter sauce.

In market square theres a great domincana restaurant. i forget the name. but its on king street(right next to the old Caribbean clothing, if you are asking someone).

Just back from St Croix. Stayed at Bucaneer. Really good breakfast buffet. The Mermaid beach bar is good for lunch. Ate dinner there twice. Good but nothing to knock your socks off. The whiskey lobster at Duggans Reef was excellent. Ate at Bacchus and had lobster ravioli. Best meal was at Slaud which is new. Just outside of C'sted. When we arrived I wondered what we got ourselves into. Sort of in a warehouse type building. The decor is very eclectic. We had duck breast and leg of duck confit for entrees with vanilla sweet potatoes. Absolutely outstanding !!! The Limonello (Italian Liquer) cheese cake was sinful. BY far the best meal we had. They have copies of restaurant menus at Bucaneer. Unfortunately Kenricks was closed. Ate lunch at Rumrunners which is very touristy. Would probably eat lunch at Paradise Cafe on Queen St if we did it again. We did cabs since we were new to the island and weren't into driving at night. Most expensive cab was to Duggans--$30 includung tip. Bucaneer has their own taxi drivers at night. They also run a shuttle to C'sted several times a day--$6/person round trip. Enjoy.

Glad you had a good trip Howard. Did you meet up with the other Fodorites? Did you find a spot to purchase?

Really appreciate the review of Salud. I had read about it recently (isn't it beyond C'sted from the Buccaneer in the Princesse area?). I'm assuming that it's prices are similar to Bacchus (a.k.a pricey but worth it). Will check out the menus. Nice to have a new place to try.

Yes we did get to meet up with Ghengis and Owa. Fun putting names and faces together and meting people you Chat with. Salud is just out of C'sted to the west. On the right hand side of the road. About a 10 min cab ride from Bucaneer. Prices are quite bit less than Bacchus. The duck entree was $24. Forgot to mention it was served in a pommegranate sauce. Really good. Found one place that has possibilities. Going back to St Croix on our way back from Barbuda in Feb to look some more.

And good luck with the househunt! We toy with the idea of buying a place on STX for retirement but are so hooked on the Buccaneer that we wonder if we would be disappointed.

Yes, I do love to fish, but I'm not planning to do this on St. Croix. Sorry, I don't know much about the fishing down there. I also love to snorkel, and plan to do lots and lots of this.

One of our favorites was the Sand Castle in Fredericksburg. The tuna was the best I have ever had along with the curried chicken and the out of this world desserts!

Never been disappointed at the Bombay Club in C'sted (gotta try the Bombay Filet, trust me). Also Tivoli Gardens is another good C'sted restaurant. Shenanigans is a good place for breakfast.

Probably best not to plan on a meal at Villa Madeleine, as there's no longer a restaurant there. That space is a private home now.
