St. Croix - How Much Cash?
First time in St. Croix - staying at Buccaneer - but planning to explore dining offsite. What kind of prices can I expect for dinner? Also, do most of the stores accept VISA/MC?
|
Going to St. Croix in May. Have been to St. Thomas and most all places we went accepted M/C. There are also Banks there that have ATMs. You can also go on line to many of the restaurants and see their menus and get an idea of the costs. You could also call the Buccaneer for info. We'll be staying there as well. Make sure you rent a car-much cheaper than taxis, and you can go anytime you want without the hassel of getting a taxi and would probably be cheaper. Have a great trip! I know I will because of all the info I have gotten on this forum!!

I generally take $200-300 in cash and rely mostly on credit cards. You can eat as lavishly or modestly as you want, and it would be a shame to miss the many wonderful restaurants on island. At places like Tutto Bene, Bacchus, Savant, Kendrick's and some others you can pay up to $100+ for two with drinks, but at places like Luncheria, Kim's, Nolan's Tavern, Pleasant's, Off the Wall you can eat very inexpensively.

Jealkon--
We leave 2/20 for the Buccaneer (our 6th trip) and usually eat off property and use taxis (the Buccaneers own) for transportation. I believe all restaurants take our Mastercard or Visa. You pay for the taxis by the person (in our case 4--kids are half price). I think we pay around $20 to $30 RT for the fares. We prefer this to renting a car as we enjoy the tropical drinks and wine and prefer not to drive home afterwards. But to each his own. We don't use much cash otherwise--snacks, gift shop purchases, lunches at the Buc can all be charged to the room. And most shops take credit cards. Have fun! If you haven't been to the Buccaneer, you are in for a treat. |
CCrosner--so jealous that you go next week; we go for our first trip to the Buccaneer mid-March and can't wait; we are with you on using cabs and wonder if you ask the same driver to come back and get you at a certain time or will the restaurants call a cab for your return trip?
Thanks! Mary in D.C. P.S. Hope you will post a quick trip report when you come back with your dining experiences! |
Happy to answer that question because the system they use surprised us on our first visit (and would probably surprise you too).
The Buc has its own 'stable' of cab drivers. You reserve them either through the concierge (my way) or the front desk (calling from your room phone). The drive you to your restaurant and the same driver will come back for you at the end of your dinner. You just ask the restaurant to call the Buc when your check is delivered, tell them your driver ("007", "Bachelor", "Mr. Lett") and he will be waiting for you when you come out of the restaurant. You pay for the round trip once he deposits you back at the lobby or your room. Very easy, no worries, great drivers. You should also let the Buc know when you are arriving and they will have a cab waiting for you at the airport that will get charged to the room. This is a different group of drivers (airport rules) but it's great to arrive and have your name on the board welcoming you at baggage claim. No hassles. I'll post my restaurant reviews when we return. A week from today we will be on our plane to STX! |
thank you--that sounds like a great system; thanks also for the tip on the aiport--I'll e-mail the Buccaneer.
Thanks again, Mary |
