St. Croix Buck Island from a cruise ship

We are taking the Disney Magic in October, and 1 stop is St. Croix. I have found in the past that if I book excursions independently that they are cheaper and better. Since the ships have only recently started back, is there a company that will pick us up in Frederiksted and then sail out to Buck Island? Or do we have to get a taxi? What company do you recommend. We are also stopping in St. Thomas, so want to snorkle St John. Any recommendations there?

Off hand, I don't know of any excursions from Frederiksted to Buck Island. The island is at the opposite end of the island from Frederiksted so your best bet may be the cruise ship excursion unless someone has a better idea.

We just returned from St. Croix and booked a trip on the Jolly Roger with Captain Mike.We chose his boat as he seemed to be more flexible then some of the other boats with regards to time of departure, itinerary for the day etc. I do know that when the cruise ships are in the trips will be focused on the cruise line schedule. You can reach him by phone at 340-513-2508.His trip was amazing and he has incredible knowledge of the reef.Seems to be very child friendly as well. His fees are $70 for 1/2 day and $85 for full day. Hope that helps.

You can easily book your own excursion to Buck Island. But no one will pick you up in Frederiksted. You'll have to take a taxi or rent a car. If you rent a car, then the car rental company would pick you up.

I'm going to be in St. Croix on a cruise stop in about a week and a half, and I'm booked for a Bucks Island tour. Just wondering: What will I see there? Am I likely to encounter sharks or barracudas or something like that?

We did see barracudas there but I have seen them at other spots and have never worried about it. They have always seemed to have no interest in approaching me.

I assume your Buck Island tour is a snorkel trip? You'll see beautiful fish and coral. It's definitely worth doing. I saw a shark on my tour, but he had no interest in me. The only thing to worry about is the coral beds - some of them can be shallow and you don't want to touch them (stings like a jelly fish bite).

We booked on our own a few years back. Hopped in a taxi right when we got off the ship, and he brought us right down to where the charter took off from....really easy.

Our day consisted of 2 for snorkeling the reef which was very nice....great visibility....didn't see too much for fish life though....might have been the time of year or just an off day. Then they stop close to the beach, so you can get out and walk the beach...really nice. This is where I saw a small (4-5 foot)Lemon shark cruising the beach. No worries, you are in no danger. I've snorkeled with bigger sharks than that, and they have little interest besides getting away from you.

Enjoy Buck's a beautiful place.
