St. Croix

Mother and daughter going in Sept. for meeting in Fredericksted and a short stay. Should we stay there or elsewhere? Concerns about crime? Driving? Any thoughts gratefully appreciated!

I visited Fredericksted on a cruise stop about two weeks ago. Of course it wasn't a thorough read on the town, being there for about eight hours, but I have to say I was pretty shocked by the poor condition of the town. It is very run down, with many dwellings abandoned as people leave the tough economic situation there.

I would look to stay outside of the town and deal with the commute. My understanding is that Christiansted is in much better shape (we didn't make it there), and there are hotels in between the two towns, including some lovely beachside resorts. It's sad, because STX has a lot of potential, but staying in Fredericksted will not show you the best that the island has to offer.

I agree with Jimmie. Fredericksted will not give you a good impression of St Croix.

But there is a great low-key resort, the Buccaneer, where our family of 5 celebrated several special events for a week last June. We loved it there. Management remembered we were celebrating, and left bubbly and a welcome card in each of our three rooms. They also upgraded us to beachfront suites.

Three beaches, three dining options, wonderful breakfast buffet included, golf, free kayaks and snorkel gear, snorkel trips that leave from the resort dock to Buck Island.

Great service from everyone we met. Special events for kids, special dinners served on the beach (local lobster is awesome). Can't say enough about how much we liked the Buccaneer.

Call them for the best rate.

We stayed at Cottages by the Sea a few miles north of Frederiksted and had a wonderful time. The attached cottages are either on the beach on steps from it, they provide noodles, chairs and the shade of palm trees on a wonderful beach where you can snorkel. There is a great restaurant, the Blue Cafe, right next door, beachfront, with a wide range of options. They have bikes and helmets. We took at trip to Buck Island with Big Beard and wished we had more time on the island, which we plan to do.

Thanks for your update. I took a mother/daughter trip with my seventeen year old in June of this year we and we really enjoyed St. Croix also. It was so laid back with few tourists. Glad you had a good time.
