St. Barths safety?
We have traveled to St. Barths for six or seven years. We have always felt very safe. We have stayed in a villa and resorts. This year we were the victims of our jeep being broken into at Saline Beach. We normally do not leave items in our cars on the islands, but have never felt it was necessary in St. Barths. They took a backpack with our video camera, Ipod, clothes, and several other items. We spent two hours a the St. Barths police station. They have recently had these petty crimes in the past six months, according to the translator. Keep your valuables with you at Saline and Colombier Beach.

Sorry to hear this Gail. I figured St. Barth's, Saba and Statia were the last of the islands in this area that you could leave your belongings in your car and not worry about them. Unfortunately, it seems that this is getting to be less and less of a good idea.

Sorry to hear about your experience.
Sadly, there are no crime-free places anymore in the Caribbean. |
I would venture to say that there is almost no place in the world anymore that you could leave valuables in plain view in a car and not have the occasional break-in. Some places in Europe have become notorious for this. In Spain, you could be walking down the street and have your purse ripped off your shoulder by a passing moped. It's a good idea to practice caution wherever you are, even at home.

I am so sorry to hear about that! That is unfortunate. I have been traveling to St Barths since the 70's and like everywhere else it has changed some. I would not leave anything of value in my car, even there...its unfortunate that we have to worry about such things!

Remember one thing, it does not always have to be a local person who removes items from vehicles on vacation, when I was in St Martin a tourist was arrested for stealing from cars in parking lots of some of the beaches, they found their hotel room with items that were taken at for different locations during that particular week.
