Split Time Bet. St. Kitts & Nevis

In a few months, we'd like to try a week at St. Kitts and Nevis. Would you advise 3 nights at Nevis and 4 in St. Kitts? What hotels do you like?

Nevis is known for its plantation inns. My faves - Nesbit, Montpelier, Hermitage.
We stay in villas on Nevis too when we go. Some very nice ones there. Four Seasons is lovely, but we would not stay there again.
Haven't stayed on St. Kitts but been there several times.
More to do/see on St. Kitts.

Nancy:

Thanks for the names of your favorite hotels at Nevis. Any particular reason why you wouldn't stay at Four Seasons again ? Do 3 nites at Nevis and 4 at St. Kitts sound about right ? (We do not have children.)

Hi Laurie,
You will probably wish you had more time on both but that is a good way to split it up.
We really enjoyed FS, but we thought it was over-rated and over-priced for the quality of the food and accomodations.
(That was just before the hurricane, and I know there have been major renovations, so maybe things are different now.)
We don't have kids either and Nevis is our very favorite island. It is so laid back and the people are amazing.
Good places to eat on Nevis include:
Local/moderate: Unella's, Cla Cha Del, Tequila Sheila's, Eddy's, Oualie Beach
Expensive: Miss June's, Montpelier, Hermitage
We always eat at Ballahoo's on St. Kitts.
You'll have a great time!

Nancy: Can you take 1 more question?
Are the restaurants you mention close by the hotels or are buses/taxis the answer? We'd probably like to have fairly nice hotels as you mention but don't want to be forced into expensive meals too often. Thank you for your help.

Hi again,
Although Nevis is a small island, things are very spread out, and taxis can get expensive pretty quickly. (It's much the same on St. Kitts.)
The bus service is extremely casual whereby you just stand by the road and flag down a minibus loaded with people driven as a taxi by locals - no bus system to speak of.
We rent a car. Driving is on the left, but there is really only one main road with a few loops off of it.
When we were there lat year, we gave rides to school kids and people needing to get from one place to another as anyone driving is flagged down by walkers. (They don't jump out in front of you or anything, they just wave...)
Eating at the nicest resorts and plantation inns can get expensive - $100 to $150 per couple for dinner.
Last time, we stayed at a hotel for one week and a villa for one week and rented a car for the entire time.
There are so many wonderful places to eat on Nevis, it's great to be able to try them.
The restaurants are spaced all over the island and there is not realy one area that has a concentration of them. You MUST get out though and experience both St Kitts and Nevis - it's the Caribbean as it used to be...

I go to Nevis regularly and love it. I would recommend that you visit St kitts first if you like night life etc and then chill out in Nevis. You must go to Sunshines bar and try his famous 'killer bees' in Nevis (located on Pinney's beach) near 4 seasons Hotel. Sorry, can't recommend hotels - i always stay with family. Anyway whatever you decide to do, you will want to return again and again!

Hi Laurie,

We had this same debate last year. We ended up spending the whole week in Nevis and just loved it. it is so much nicer and laid back than kitts. We took a day trip to St. Kitts and saw the major sights (Brimstone Hill, etc.) But, we were glad to return to Nevis. We stayed at the Oualie Beach Hotel. What you may want to do is spend the whole on Nevis but split your time between a plantation in the mountains and a hotel right on the beach.

Nancy, what are your favorite villas in Nevis? Hoping to get there someday, and we are hooked on villas! I heard Hurricane Cove is great, have you stayed there?

Hi Joan,
Hurricane Cove looks really nice, and is a perfect spot as you can use the pool at your villa, and then take a short stroll down to Oualie Beach to their nice beach and also to have your meals.
They have a good restaurant and jovial bar there.
There was a couple staying at HCB who was sitting with us at the bar, and they were just thrilled with their villa with private pool.
We stayed at 2 different villas because we are building there and wanted to get an idea of where on the island we wanted to buy property.
The best villa we stayed in was Amazing Grace up in the Montpelier area with 2 BR and a private pool and hot tub.
The e-mail for the Carr's, who own the villa, is [email protected].
They live on Nevis in the villa from Nov. to sometime in the Spring, so it is only available in the off-season.
We got better deals on the villas by going directly through the owners.
Check out cvoa.com and vrbo.com.
A GORGEOUS villa is called Caribbean Glory. WOW!
If there is a group of you going, the price would be reasonable.
Good luck!

Hi all:

My husband and I just booked a week at the Nesbitt (sp?) plantation in Nevis this March (2003). It looks like we made the right choice b/t Nevis and St. Kitts re: your responses. Any other recs on what to do while there?

Thanks!

I have to join the crowd favoring Nevis. It is so laid back and the people are wonderful. Not much nightlife, but we go there to relax. Be sure to take a rainforest hike hosted by an American ex-Peace Corp volunteer - it's very interesting and beautiful.

We have only stayed at the Four Seasons and true, it is very expensive but the rooms, service and golf course and spa are unbeliveable, especially since the total renovation after Hurricane Lennie. I would book the B&B package at the Four Seasons but eat at the other island restaurants Nancy recommended. If you are inclined to favor a more intimate B&B "inn" atmosphere, Montpelier & Hermitage are the best. Visiting Nevis must be like visiting Florida in the 30s.
