Southern Palms, Barbados

We have seen a great deal on this hotel, which is in the St. Lawrence Gap area. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has stayed there. I realise it is probably fairly basic, but look for clean and a good beach. Thank you.

My husband and I just returned from a marvelous week at the Southern Palms hotel in Barbados. The beach was fantastic - beautiful white sand and not crowded. The hotel was really very nice. I'd say that it is underrated (at 2 stars). The service was good. The pool was lovely, and the location couldn't be beat. We had the least expensive room which was small, but clean. The bathroom had been completely redone. The bed was comfortable and the towels were large and fluffy. It was three steps from the beach and had a lovely shaded patio in front with chairs and tables and a couple of lounge chairs that was shared with about 4 units. There are a variety of rooms because the resort has grown by buying up adjascent properties and I would imagine that some rooms are fancier than others.

One big advantage of this property is its location - you can walk to any number of restaurants - of all price ranges. So you don't have to hire a cab to take you to dinner. There is a free shuttle to Bridgetown if you want to go shopping, and taxis are not expensive. The hotel has a restaurant and a snack area - next to the pool - both with pretty good meals - although we ate there only once for dinner.

If we go back to Barbados, we would definitely stay there again.

I totally agree with electrac. We stayed at Southern Palms in 2003 and loved every minute of it. We stayed at Bougainvillia in 2006, and I preferred Southern Palms hands down.

The location is great; walk to the Gap restaurants. The beach is beautiful with some beautiful sunsets.

Food was good, service very good. Highly recommend.

The OP was from 2003. I'm guessing the great deal has now expired

My boyfriend and I have stayed at the Southern Palms twice, (we liked it so much the first time) first in Feb. 1997 and again in Feb. 2000 and we loved it. The view is beautiful whether it is of the ocean or gardens and the rooms were clean and comfortable. We are not all-inclusive fans and dining out in St. Lawrence Gap is great with many options and the meals we did eat at the hotel were very good too. The beach was nice, water was a bit rough there both times -though it didn't bother us .

We were in Barbados again in 2003 for my daughters wedding and stayed in St. James at the Crystal Cove. It was her choice and it was nice too. It was an all-inclusive resort and in addition to its restaurant they offered dining options at their companion resorts Turtle Beach (down the road from Southern Palms in Christ Church), Colony Club and Tamarind Cove and we actually did not mind doing all-inclusive that way.

But....I do love St. Lawerence Gap and the Southern Palms. We are going back next year and that's where we will go again.
