Soufriere market?
 

Hi folks.
Isn't there a "Farmer's Market" in Sufriere on Saturdays or something? Is it worth-while or a waste of time? Any other tips for crafts / souveniers in the southern area?

There is one in Castries and it's HUGE. It's the best place for crafts/souveniers.

Yes, it's located down close to the docks and it's very small. They have very basics goods, fruits, vegetables etc. -it's not touristy, just locals.

I don't think it had much if any souvenirs (this was in 04).

Crafts are available (or at least they used to be) at Choiseul. It's a nice drive south of Soufriere too.

On the main road on a hill just north of Soufriere, there's a place that sells nice local arts and crafts, including wood carvings, oil paintings and furniture. It's located in two Creole looking shacks at a sharp bend in the road. I realize that that sounds like a rather vague description of its location but you really can't miss it. For things like t-shirts and wraps, the Castries market is probably your best bet. Castries is only about 40 minutes north of Soufriere and it's a pretty nice ride. Lots of nice views. Just north of Anse La Raye (at least I think that's where it is), there's a little shack on the side of the road that sells fresh cassava bread. If you see this place (it's real easy to miss), definitely stop for some. It's delicious. Two places to stop near Castries for things like batique (sp?) wraps and artsy things like that are Bagshaw's shop, which is located near the entrance to the Sandal's Regency and Caribelle (sp?) Batique located at the Morne. I won't try to describe how to get there because I would get you lost. You are better off stopping and asking someone for directions.

There are several craft and souvenir stores in Soufriere as well as the market, which sells both crafts and produce. Everything is within easy walking distance of the pier. The market in Castries is certainly bigger and offers a wider range of goods, and there are more upscale shops there.
