Where in the Bahamas for kids & parents?

We want to visit the Bahamas next June 2001. We've not been anywhere but the U.S. & I want a memorable vacation-part relaxing, part fun and 3 or so days of sight-seeing. I've been looking into Nassau as well as Eleuthera. Also, do you recommend a hotel or a rental house? (We're on a bit of a budget)I LOVE THE WATER and would like something on the beach, tho not the Atlantic side. (Our kids will be 10 yrs. & 15) Thanks for your help.

I take it you are thinking of New Providence Island(Nassau). You can stay at the Comfort Suites, which are adjacent to the Atlantis, and really nice. You also have total access to Atlantis' beach and all its recreational activities. Plus, they serve a free continental breakfast each morning. Also, book a snorkeling excursion with Bahama Divers, so your young ones can witness a true coral reef with hundreds of colorful reef fish. I have many hints for low cost meals. Write me if you want more info. I stop in Nassau, to rest before going to the outer islands of Nassau. Robert

You would lovel the Poop Deck, which is moderately priced. Walk over the PI Bridge onto Bay Street, turn left and walk about a quarter mile. When you see Bahama Divers on the left hand side of Bay Street, the Poop Deck is just above it. OK, now, before you go over the PI Bridge, still on the PI side of the bridge, you'll see a neat little shopping center called Hurricane Hole(?) or something close to that. They have a neat deli there that serves soups and sandwiches, pizza, ice cream, etc. for inexpensive prices. Also, you can order a Dominoes Pizza, to the Comfort Suites I know, for a moderate price. And, you can get an all-conch pizza, which I ate, and which is delicious. Another tip, walkl down a short path to the right of the PI Bridge, and you'll discover a small, local Bahamian Ferry service which takes you across the waters right to the wharf area, by the Straw Market. Walk down Bay Street toward the old British Colonial Hotel, and right across the street is a Dunkin' Donut and next store is a Bahamian owned restaurant with moderately priced to inexpensive selections. You can get cracked conch, conch salad and conch fritters while you whoof down a Kahlik Beer, the pride of the Bahamians. Also, hit the Winn Dixie grocery store to get snacks and in-room eats for your hotel room. The Comfort Suites are for you, on Paradise Island. Moderately priced and you have access for free to all the Atlantis recreation facilites, including the beach. Buy snorkeling equipment for you and your kids in the states, and pace them in your suitcase. "Get high-quality ones from a local dive shop, not from K-mart. Here's what I saw while snorkeling off of Atlantis' beach: a southern sting ray, spiny lobster, sargeant major, damsel fish, grey angelfish, blue-stripped grunts, several stoplight parrotfish, and blue tang. Go snorkeling with your kids off the Atlantis beach, then, call Bahama Divers who will pick you up and deliver you back to your hotel. They will take you and your kids to incredible reefs like Cannonball Reef where the James Bond film was shot. Shallow reefs with thousands of reef creatures will catapult you and your family into a fantasy land and you'll know you're someplace different. Robert

I called the Comfort Suites about a suite for our family (2 parents, 3 kids) they said only 4 to a room - we'd have to get two! Any advice on a large family-friendly spot on Nassau?

You may want to try the old British Colonial Hotel, the "BC" as the natives call her. My wife and I used to stay here also, and the 9 acres in the back are lush with tropical growth. It's got soul!! The beach is great, and you can view ocean liners coming in to dock at the Prince Edward Wharf. Also, a diving op is on the premises, for dive or snorkeling trips. I Id'd many reef fish, believe it or not, by the rock wall to the left of the beach. I don't know the new prices because the BC was completely revamped several years ago. Look into it. It's right on Bay Street, about a 40 second walk from the Straw Market. Robert

3 words: Atlantis, Atlantis, Atlantis. It's such a great place for kids. The advice about Comfort Suites is good, too, because it's lower priced and you get all the facilities of Atlantis, which are truly out of this world.

Melanie; June is a great time to go; pray for no hurricanes, though. Read the comments about the Comfort Suites, which is right across the street(Casino Drive) from the Atlantis. You get all the Atlantis recreational benefits, plus an uncrowded pool to return to to take a break. June will be crowded at the Atlantis. Also, a free Continental Breakfast is offered at the Comfort Suites each morning. OK, here's some information for ya about food savings: Try the New Paradise Restaurant & Lounge on Palmtree Avenue, The Grove. Steamed Conch, Cracked Conch, Chicken, etc., served the Bahamian way. You will give your wallet a break there. To the right of the Paradise Island Bridge is a small ferry boat operation, and the islanders will deliver you to downtown Nassau docks, and give you a friendly and humorous trip along the way, for only a couple bucks. Avoid taking a taxi. Johnny Canoe has very good food for reasonable prices. Try Sbarros Pizza next door. The Conch Fritters at the Casino Cafe at the Atlantis Gotel are great, as well as the grouper fingers, and aren't as outrageously over-priced as everything else is there. Try Cafe Johnny Canoe at the Nassaun Beach Hotel and Dicky Mo's just west of Cable Beach Radisson. Cracked Conch at Johnny Canoe's is great. You can get Conch Pizza at Pizza Hut and free Conch Fritters at Casuarinas at Cable jBeach during Happy Hour every day from 4-6:30. McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts, unfortunately, have invaded New Providence, but the prices are low. Watch out cashing Traveler's Checks at supermarkets and restaurants; they will charge a fee. Order Dominos Pizza, which delivers to your room, and a subway is across the PI bridge. Call Bahama Divers for snorkeling tours to great reefs. Also, the "Flying Cloud" a large Catamaran, takes you to a beautiful island for good snorkeling. Hit the Winn Dixie grocery store for snacks and food items to eat in your hotel room; it's much cheaper!! Walking toward the PI bridge from the Atlantis, turn right into the Hurricane Hole Shopping Center(small). There is a neat deli that serves pizza, soups, sandwiches, etc. for low to moderate prices. E-mail me if you have any specific questions. My wife and I love Nassau and Hog Island(Paradise Island) and stop in for city life before heading out to the outer islands. Robert

There is a Holiday Inn in Nassau that has family units with bunk beds - might accommodate 5.
