Sobriety Checkpoints

Greetings!
On our last visit to St. Martin, in 2006, the police on the French side of the island were running sobriety checkpoints at various places. We were stopped on the road from Marigot to Grand Case.

Do the checkpoints still exist? Where?

Thanks for your help!!

Hmmm...are you saying that you're planning to drive drunk if there aren't any checkpoints? Why not just exercise the same drinking precautions you would at home and use a designated driver? Or better yet, support the local economy on St. Martin and hire a taxi driver!

That was really helpful.

Now, does anyone have any current knowledge related to my question?

Thanks in advance!

Sobriety check points are never announced, people would know to avoid them, defeats the purpose.

I would rather be inconvinienced by a checkpoint than hit by a drunk driver........

While I can somewhat understand your asking about the checkpoints, (delays and such - remember you are on holiday) I have to agree with the posters here, the checkpoints help save the lives of drivers on the roads.

Roads in the Caribbean islands are not always the best and we as tourist are not familiar with the roads even if you travel there each year.

Road construction can change the layout in several months and what you remember may not be the same from year to year. On of the most important factors - Drinking and Driving is not something any of us should be considering. There can be locals walking, biking, and scootering on the roads (as we have) day and night. You may encounter a local livestock herd surprise you in the middle of the road, think of your reaction to this variables.

If sobriety check exits take the knowledge that they do and be safe and forewarned that you just might be stopped on the way back to your resort. After all it is for your safety also.

Be safe and enjoy.
