Snorkeling trip ideas

Hi, I am trying to figure out where to go for a snorkeling trip soon. I am open to going off the beach or on a snorkel tour off of a boat. I just want to find the best place to go in the Caribbean.

I have been to St. Thomas, which I thought was ok. I also thought Grand Cayman was good but not great in my opinion.

I have never been to Bonaire or Curacao, or snorkeled in the bahamas. How are they?

If you have a suggestion other than what I mentioned please let me know.

One last thing, someone I am going with is afraid of iguanas that you see on some caribbean islands. Anyone know of a place that does not have them?

Thanks so much for the advice. I am looking forward to this trip

I thought the snorkelling in Cozumel was really good, and the scuba.
Loved Bonaire too, Curacao had some decent snorkelling but there are lots of iguanas. Tobago is also ok, not sure what is the best as I'm happy as long as I see something. The Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve was also good, I did my advance open water course there.

Thanks for the reply Odin. I would love to go to Bonaire but I can't get a direct flight from south florida so not sure if the rest of my party would be interested.

Curacao flies out of Miami so that could be good.

Right now I think I have narrowed it to Curacao, Turks and Caicos or the bahamas.

Thanks again for the advice

St John, Ambergris Caye (Belize), Cozumel, Parts of the Riviera Maya (Akumal), Roatan, Several of the British Virgin Islands all known for good snorkeling. You will find it in other areas, but these are known snorkeling destinations. Surprised you didn't enjoy Grand Cayman, as there are some great reefs to be found there if you get away from the crowds.

There are no direct flights to Bonaire from where I am either, but it was worth the effort but there are lots of iguanas, they don't bother anyone though. Cozumel was worth the effort of getting to, if you want good snorkelling. Just off Cancun, we snorkelled with whale sharks and rays.

Thanks for the replies Bassguy and Odin. I just thought Grand Cayman was ok. The reef we were taken to on a boat tour was bleached out. The snorkeling off the beach was not bad. I was told Cayman brac is a lot better than grand cayman.

Thanks for the tips guys!

If you want to go to the best snorkeling in the Caribbean, then make the effort to go to Bonaire, specifically Klein Bonaire.

Thanks Jimmy! Bonaire looks great, not sure if I will get to go this trip but it's definitely on my list

Read some TA reviews of Woodwind excursions to get yourself motivated to go. After seeing what's happening at the Great Barrier Reef, I don't take for granted anymore that these reefs will always be here.

You are right. Horrible what happened to the great barrier reef. We need to see these reefs while they are still there.

I expect by now you've booked your trip to some great place. Still I wanted to give you info for future use. We LOVE Turks and Caicos (Providenciales) and have been going there every May for 13 years. In general, the snorkeling is great. It is especially good if you go with a company called Caicos Adventures. They offer both a dive and snorkel trips, and are very professional. And like many companies they pick you up at your hotel. We've been on many a trip with them, both half-day and full-day trips. I can't imagine that you'd be disappointed. The full-day trip to West Caicos is very good, but if you can manage to catch them on a week when they have a full-day trip to French Cay that is wonderful.
There are direct, non-stop flights from Miami, I believe daily.
Stay on a beach front resort if at all possible, the beach is incredibly beautiful. It is my favorite place in the whole world. Already booked for May 2018 and 2019.

There are two good spots off the beach on Provo but both are becoming swamped by tourists. The tours out the the reef are a good experience but NOTHING on the island is cheap. If you book 3 or 4 trips then the bill soon amounts.

Look at The Abacos in The Bahamas. There are few cars, most transport is by rental boat which start at $600 a week a boat in Provo can cost that for a day. the reefs are very active and the beaches as good as anywhere. It's very easy to rent a cottage which a dock and have the boat on your doorstep. Much more laid back than The Turks and Caicos.

Hands down the best trip we ever took was To St. John! We stayed at Caneel bay and can snorkel right off the beach! Tons of colorful fish, lots of turtles and stingrays. We also went to Cozumel and it couldn't even compare. Caneel is pricey but so worth it, we are thinking about going back for our honeymoon!
