snorkeling in st Lucia

I have been reading about a lot of beaches that claim to have great beach entry sites, for example Anse Chastanet beach. I was curious, does that mean that we can just put on snorkeling gear and swim out a little ways to see a reef? Is this a good way to see things, or should we still pay for a snorkeling excursion?

You can snorkel straight from Anse Chastenet beach, so yes put your snorkel gear on and swim to the reserve which is only couple feet away from the beach. It is enclosed by nets. Easy entry is also possible at Anse Cochon although you do have to climb down many steps to the beach, but once there the access to the snorkelling area is easy. We saw alot of squid in this area.

Do to see a reef in these areas and lots of fish? Would you suggest doing this in our own or do you think that we would see more of we do a guided trip?
