snorkeling and other adventures - which island?

We're looking for an island with great snorkeling but also has other adventure opportunities, hiking, kayaking, etc... We were thinking about Costa Rica but have since realized there isn't really much as far as snorkeling there. We loved Kauai because of the different options there. We've been to Belize too. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Caribbean islands bknown for very good to excellent snorkeling include the following:

Bonaire - some say this is the best in the Caribbean.
Grand Cayman
St. John
Virgin Gorda
Anegada
Turks & Caicos
Many of the Bahamas Out-Islands

Of these St. John may be closest to what you are seeking since 2/3's of the island is a National Park with lots of hiking & exploring opportunities and there are numerous places where you can kayak. Virgin Gorda runs a very close second with very good areas for hiking and kayaking.

St. John.

We liked Grand cayman for the snorkeling, but there was no hiking type stuff. It is more arid. St. John has all the National park land to explore and is more green.

Our two favorite Islands for snorkeling is 1.) Grand Cayman and 2.) Cozumel

I think you'll find more things to explore in Cozumel. You can also take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen.

You didn't specify what type of accomendations you are looking for. We just booked the El Cozumeleno in Cozumel for 4 nights in December and go an unbelievable deal. It's an AI resort and supposed to have the a really great snorkeling beach.

ABACO - there is a place Tilloo Cay - at the sound end you have great reefs of Pelican Cays, half way north there is Tilloo bank with some of the most incredible colours of sea due to the sand banks. At the north end there is Tilloo Cut - snorkel on a rising tise

...rising tide and anything - and I mean anything could turn up. Beluga Whales and Polar Bears are exempted but the rest could be there. Whales sharks, Orca, Wahoo, Dolphin, Humpbacks, Becked Whales the list is endless.

Combine this with the fact that the islands have relaxed low key resorts and first world facilities - you cannot go wrong.
