Snorkel Gear

We are ready to leave for a 10 day vacation in the Virgin Islands. Do I need to bring my fins or just my mask and snorkel? I deliberately bought a pair of "basic" fins to travel with, however if not needed I will leave them at home. Finally....here we come! Thanks!

While ocean conditions are usually very calm in the Virgin Islands it is a good safely measure to always wear fins while snorkeling. Fins enable you to swim (if you want to or need to) greater distances with relative ease. I love my fins -- they make me feel powerful and confident in the water.

Bring you fins. Be safe. Have fun.

Thanks, I'll take the fins. We're staying on Tortola and St. John. One more day!

You don't really need to bring anything there are plenty of places to rent equipment. If you need the room in your suitcase and don't mind dropping a few bucks. If you'd like a few snorkel tips or just want to check out some of the best snorkel sites check this out.

We also purchased our own snorkeling gear, which was really convenient. In the past, we've rented gear for the duration of our trip. Now we each have our own set that we know fits us well. Surprisingly, the snorkel gear (even though there are four of us) doesn't take up too much room.

My husband and oldest daughter packed their fins for our trip to St. John. I myself am not so good with fins, so my younger daughter and I snorkeled in our Chaco sandals. That way our feet are protected from urchins and sharp shells.

I say if you plan on snorkeling over your lifetime with any consistency, buy your own snorkel gear.

Bon Voyage!
