OK, we're through monkeying around. Here's two hard, back-to-back questions. If you get both these you are definately a Bahamian Regul, and I will mail a personal letter to Prime Minister Ingraham, recommending you for Bahamian Citizenship. Here it is: <BR> There is a beer in the Bahamas, locally brewed, and popular among all the island. It also has a logo on the bottle, with two cowbells. Here's the three questions: <BR> <BR>(1) What is the name of the beer, with proper spelling? <BR>(2) How do you correctly pronounce the beer's name, typing out the pronounciation after the correct spelling(Ex: Budweiser-"bud-wise-zer").Whatever, you get the picture. <BR>(3) What is the symbolism and meaning of the cowbells on the bottle? <BR> <BR>(4) Optional: How many bottles of this beer have you whoofed down in one sitting, and what do you remember afterwards?? This doesn't count toward your citizenship if you miss it. If you get 1-3 correct, my letter will be on the way to Ingraham's desk. Robert

Hope your recommendation for citizenship works, because I'm tired of asking every Abaconian male to marry me in an attempt to get citizenship! (So is my husband.) <BR> <BR>Here are the answers: <BR>(1) The beer is Kalik <BR>(2) Depending on how many you've had, its pronounced either "Click" or "Kuh-lik" <BR>(3) The cowbells symbolize Junkanoo, and the sound they make during the festivities is the inspiration for the name of the beer. <BR>(4) How many? I can't remember. But when my crew left Marsh Harbour at the end of our week's catamaran charter in April, there was a shortage. <BR> <BR>Am I in yet?

Eva.......you are RIGHT!! All three questions are correct! Kahlik Beer is brewed in the Bahamas, and recently topped Becks as the no. 1 seller there. Kalik beer has NO other popular beer that tastes like it, and it's food partners are fried conch, red peas and rice" The flavor is like that of an overbrewed home beer, probably tastes good while you're catching all those bonefish. It tops Pola Beer from Trinidad. I found out that Kahlik is tastes better while watching the gin-colored and turquoise waters under a thatched roof. <BR> Great Eva, Kahlik symbolizes the Junkanoo, which is the ca-lick sound of cowbells in the parades. INDEPENDENCE DAY for the Bahamas. Regarding question no. 4, I drank too many Kahliks on Abaco, and suddenly saw squares with spots and horizontal strips of lights flashing in front of my eyes. I woke up the next day, still sitting in a bar stool with my hand on the armrests, staring at the ceiling. I will try and get you citizenship, Eva. I will e-mail Prime Minister Ingraham. Robert

Dear Curious; Their is an old hotel on Shirley Street, in Nassau called the Montagu Hotel, built in the early 1920's. It was one of the first hotels built(I think the old British Colonial on Bay Street was the first, just down from the straw market), and catered to the beginning tourists back then. Close by is remnants of Fort Montagu, built to defend Nassau in the 1700's. The Fort has a nice beach with large shade trees along a sandy beach. It's a rundown place now, I believe. Curious, when were you there, and what can you remember of it. Please advise and thanks, Robert

Hi Robert-We were there for spring week..over 30 years ago. Wow I sound ancient!Anyhow,I belive it was near Fort Montagu,a large 4-5 story stucco pink building ,it had a large pool(Maybe called The Mermaid Bar)you sat at the bar and could view the pool underwater. There was a beach directly accross the street. We would hitch hike into Front Street and take small boats to Paradise Island. The bridge was newly opened. It was the fist time I saw the perfect colors of the tropical sea-now we go to many caribbean islands,but have not been back to Nasaau.Now that there is a high speed ferry I will visit again and go to Harbour Island.

Curious; Thanks for the info. I was in Nassau for the first time in 1968, with several frat brothers. We stayed at another older hotel, too, around where the Montague was. I remember taking the boats over to Paradise Island, before the PI Bridge was constructed. Just like you, the turquoise and gin-colored waters thrilled me. Robert

Hi Robert-A few of us went from the same university,we had such fun-meal plan,no way,I remember taking rolls from the breakfst trays outside the room,eating tuna fish sandwichs for dinner(I still do that),the pineapples tasted so good,we went to the casino(over the hill?),hitch hiked and danced and drank at some real fun bars.It seems so innocent now!!!!Anyhow now we go to St. John,Anguilla and Bermuda. These are my favorite islands. How often do you go to Nassau? My husband and I adore the caribbean and one of these days I will get back to Nassau,as Harbour Island is on my to do list! <BR>Penny <BR>

Penny; Yep, we did some of the same antics back in the late 60's on good old Nassau. Less people, less hype, and I liked the old hotels much better. Even the now revamped British Colonial had thatched roof parts back then!! Paradise Island was renamed from "Hog Island" believe it or not. Mariners started wild hogs there as a safe food supply as they explored the new world. Funny, but we were thinking of going to St. John this summer. Where's a good place to stay and explore from?? I wonder if I should continue with the Bahamian Trivial Pursuit...are the questions too easy?? Robert

Hi Robert-We are spoiled beach bums,we stay at Caneel Bay,and we love to eat in Cruz Bay. St. John is beautiful,great snorkeling and low key. Caneel has 7 beaches,the island itself is mostly national park. I can describe Cruz Bay as happy,dappy,laid back,sort of Southern California style beachy town,a little Jersy shore too!A lot of people rent villas.It is also a good island to get ferries to Tortola,Jost Van Dyke,Virgin Gorda etc.Please feel free to ask questions.This forum has good info on St. John.I think you have some trivia fans- and we are boring them.

Penny; Thanks for the info on St. John. When I first saw turquoise and gin colored waters in Nassau in the 60's, I vowed to come back. I did, and revisited Nassau, then Eleuthera, San Salvador, Great Exuma, Great Abaco, and Long Island. Have dispersed out to St.Croix and Tortola, and always wanted to go to St. John. Tweedy is a frequent Bahama visitor, and her description of Harbour Island will probably pull me to it, too! Thanks for mentioning the Bahama Trivial Pursuit; I forgot about it. I appreciate the listeners like Robyn, who answered the Potter's Cay question, Ruth who knew about the Bahama Parrot on Abaco, Jane who knew about the ocean creatures greeting tourists in the Blue Lagoon.
