Single Trying to Vacation
if you find a singles group, let me know please.
|
I was travelling alone last year and Costa cruises actually dropped the extra single supplementary charge. My whole trip was less than $1500 Cdn and I had a great time. Met lots of people.

Windjammer Cruises have singles cruises every year. I am single and I took a regular Windjammer trip on the Polynesia and I never lacked for company. It can be rather lonely but while traveling alone I have had tons of singles and couples engage me in conversation. If you have a particular interest such as bike tours ask your travel agent if there is a special outing expecially for singles.

Ask your travel agent for a brochure on a company called Singleworld. They are an agency out of New York (I think). The deal is, they book singles in a group, give you a roommate close to your age (same sex) and preference, and you travel as a group. If the group is large enough, they send their own tour guide too. Their emphasis has been Caribbean-I went on my first cruise with them and had a good time. Another company specializing in single packages is Contiki (maybe Kontiki). They tend to emphasize Europe and more exotic locations. One more suggestion is an all-inclusive resort like Club Med or Hedonism II in Jamaica - they will book you in a room with a roommate at the double occupany rate or a single room with a supplement. The single supplement is a lot more reasonable in the land resorts than on cruises (generally $30-50 per day rather than 150-200%). I travel alone all the time, love it, and would be happy to answer more questions if you want.

I know nothing about groups for singles travel, but
I can recommend a destination for singles. For the females who are naturalists, eco-environmentalist, or bikers, you might consider Cuba. If you are simply a beach lover, you might also consider it. Cuba has some fine beaches, beautiful mountains, and beautiful old buildings. A single female will have no trouble being swamped by male attention from average to handsome Cubanos who would like to be your friend--would like to help you find an apartment, a hotel, taxi, restaurant, or whatever you might need. Just being a friend to a foreigner may get him a coke, beer, or possibly a meal. He will offer to serve as a guide, escort, or driver. Cubanos have few chances for a good meal without being with a foreigner. I know two males and one female who are doctors there. They earn possibly 40 pesos per month, and with the exchange rate at 21 pesos per dollar, that months salary is about $20. Those workers who work in hotels and around tourists have it better. They can earn tips. Tropi colas are the equivalent of US Cokes, and they cost $.45 at the grocery store. Beer cost $.85, so they don't have many opportunities for those luxuries except when they are with foreigners. (Check out Cuba travel on Deja News or Lonely Planet). If the female can speak Spanish she will think she is the queen-of-the-campus with all of the atttention she will receive. She will still receive that attention if she does not speak Spanish, because many of the Cubanos are trying to learn English. The difficulty will be in discouraging TOO much attention. Travel is safe, secure, and inexpensive. It is also illegal from the USA, so Americans will have to go to Canada, Mexico, or perhaps Nassau to travel to Cuba. The US dollar is king! It is the only type currency accepted from tourists, except the new peso which is equivalent to one dollar. For the male, he will also be covered with attention from males and females. The males will want to find him a hotel, taxi, or restaurant. The females will want to keep him company! Going to Cuba is illegal for Americans, but no one since the beginning of the economic embargo in 1963 has, accoring to what I can find out, ever been prosecuted for going. You just don't advertise that you are going. Journalists, educators, and others can get permission from the Treasury Dept. and can go legally. I am an educator. If you want more info, 'e-me'. Best regards-Hugh |
The monthly salary in the previous post should have
read 400 (four hundred) pesos, not 40! Also, average Cubanos working other jobs might earn 125 to 150 pesos per month. |
Second the motion on Windjammer Barefoot Cruises as a great place for singles...or couples, families, old, young, whatever, as well. (check out their Web site www.windjammer.com) I think it's the one vacation "destination" I've experienced where a single person is guaranteed to meet people immediately, visit interesting islands, cruise on a ship that isn't simply a floating hotel, enjoy local entertainment (both on island and on board), and have a terrific time at a reasonable price.

Singleworld is out of business. Oh well.
I prefer Club Med to the other all-inclusives, in that they seat you at meals with other people. Instead of making you find a seat on your own. I would be interested in destinations (other than Club Med) where there are single people. (As opposed to travelling in a group.) Steven |
Michele,
I'm single and have been traveling alone or doing escorted tours for 8 yrs. now. Have never had any luck finding anything that caters to singles. It seems to me there are enough messages on here from singles with the same concerns and interests - what if we took some type of survey as far as where people wanted to go and what they wanted to do? I would offer to act as a coordinator and see if there was enough interest to come up with the "right" number of people to arrange our own tour, or we could then book thru a company and get the lower rates, etc. For myself, I have done Costa Rica, Greece, France, Spain,Italy, Morroco, several carribean islands, and of course the states. I am currently going to Trinidad over Thanksgiving (Nov 22-29) to spend 4 nights at a nature center and then 3 nights on the sister islanld of tobaggo. Also plan on doing a trip to Belize in March or April. I try to do 2 trips a year. Let me know if any of this interests you. PS I do not have access to the internet over the weekends; Jan email me at: [email protected] |
Michele is right. Traveling alone sucks most of the time. I get 6-1/2 weeks vacation and my husband can only take 2 with me, so I just keep going back to the same place where I know the area and the people. Sometimes I can find a girlfriend to go but most of the time I can't. I go 5-6 times a year to Freeport, Bahamas, sometimes for 4 day, sometimes for a week. I know a great 1 BR condo and the owners live there. I feel safe and they do not mind me inviting over the Bahamian friends I have met over the years. They are a great couple and I check in with them so they know about when to expect me back. Let me know if anyone wants info.

How about a Windjammer cruise? Very casual...always
singles aboard who have a great time! It's the one thing I would feel very comfortable doing alone! |
I've been on four trips on my own and always had a great time. In fact, I've met far more people than when I've gone with friends or a boyfriend. I would highly recommend a spa vacation. La Source in Grenada is all-inclusive and has fantastic activities. I've also found cruises work great since you will be seated with a group at meals. You need to request a table of singles or those of your own age. My last cruise (RCCL)I was seated with a table of five singles and we have even kept in touch since. I also went to Club Med (Columbus Isle) which was supposed to be oriented towards couples. The food, scuba diving and other activities were fun and I enjoyed meeting the mostly European guests. Again, here you will be seated with other guests at meals.

Hugh, --- This is for you -- To visit the oppressor's house is to sanction oppression... As long as a nation has not won its rights, any of its
children who feast in the house of those who subjugate its people is an enemy of the people." Jose Marti This is the full quote by Marti on those who party in the house of a tyrant. Marti is to Cuba what Thomas Jefferson is in the United States. I for one will forgive you who take advantage of those who are suffering to feed your shallow needs. If you want to help the Cuban people help the thousands in prison for exercising their God-given rights. Soliciting for the Castro regime is really pathetic. -----Learn about what your promoting at--http://www.fiu.edu/~fcf/ |
Hey, I agree with you: from the beginning of these postings, there are many of you looking for singles to hang out with so it seems. Why don't you all get together via internet and arrange your own destination. This seems to be a very good answer to your problem!!
|
Guys, if anyone is still following this posting and thinking of trying to do something about our mutual problem, please count me in. Everyone I used to go to exciting places with has gotten married or is otherwise uninterested/unavailable. Right now I am considering switching ISP's so probably the best way to e-mail me would be at my juno (free no-frills e-mail) address: [email protected]. Thanks!
