Single On An Island-Help for Solo Traveler
 

For a solo woman traveler-mid 30s, which of these islands is the most recommended for safety, snorkeling, easy to get around without a car. I have been to Grand Cayman and Aruba. Would like to try one of the following in April--Anguilla, Barbados, Bahamas,St. Maarten. Any of these ok for what I want/need? Any other suggestions?

I don't think I'd recommend any of the ones you mentioned due to the fact that you requested a place with good snorkeling.

If I were going on my own and wanted good snorkeling and ease of getting around and safety, I'd go with:

St John, USVI
Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, MX

St. Maarten is difficult to get around w/o a car. Anguilla might be the safer of those two islands for a solo female traveler, yet you could still go to St. Maarten for the day by ferry.

have you thought about a Windjammer cruise? Good way to see many of the islands, and you can always go back and spend more time on your favorite.

If you are prepared to make a little effort,
then I can highly recommend TIamo on
Andros Island in the Bahamas. While I am
married, I needed time away and visited this property alone in December, 2005. I would say that at least half of the guests were single, and made to feel really at home. There are wonderful beach activities, including snorkeling (with complimentary boat trips), a safe and peaceful environment, and a perfect staff. If you can afford the seaplane, then by all means do so. All meals are included, and they are served "family style", so all guests are one big family. I have been to many high end properties in the Caribbean, but wanted
something more personal for this trip. It fit the bill perfectly, and the owners will be very
accommodating regarding your needs. The cost is reasonable for what is offered, and
the eco-resort mentality is also very attractive. As an alternative, Anguilla may suit you, but I believe that many properties on this island are now very expensive as it is a bit of a "destination". Do not recommend St. Maarten due to crowds and package tour environment. I have not been to Grand Cayman recently, but found it to be very
predictable with large American style hotels
and no character. Bahamas out islands are
definitely something to consider - see the other posters. I also love Nevis, and believe
that you would enjoy Nisbet Plantation, which has a lovely beach, meals are incuded, and no need for a car. In April, after a certain date, you might even benefit
from some great off-season deals for a fabulous property. I am sure you would feel
very comfortable at Nevis a a solo.

I'm around same age, and I traveled solo to Cozumel, stayed at the Melia, and had a great time. Snorkeling was excellent, hotel was very safe and friendly. I took taxi into town (just a few miles) and walked around and shopped by myself almost every day, and never had any kind of problem. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to return there alone!
