Silly Barbados food question
 

I've been perusing restaurant menus online (isn't food one of the best parts of a vacation?!), and I haven't seen any with conch fritters! Or any conch. Is it not popular on Barbados? Any suggestions for restaurants with conch? It may seem silly, but I LOVE conch, and you just don't find much conch in upstate NY!

Hmm, I seem to recall eating conch when I was in Barbados. In some parts of the Caribbean it's also known as lambi--are you seeing that offered anywhere?

Hello fellow up-state New Yorker! We too were looking for conch fritters while in Barbados. There was a street vendor in the St. Lawrence Gap area that had a lot of the shells - my husband asked him who was eating all that conch. He laughed and said that we wouldn't find it in the retaurants that tourists go to.

hi Pam! :) I'm willing to go the restaurants that the locals go to. Those are usually much more interesting than touristy places (define "interesting" as you please! lol)Those are the places where you REALLY learn about the culture!

Well....looks like I'll be walking the streets of Barbados..........looking for my fritters. lol

I suspect you'll be able to find some at the friday night fish fry in Oistens. Lots of food vendors. For an excellent conch fritter receipe go to www.bobmorris.net He is an author and serves fritters at his book signings. We normally bring home conch from the Turks but you can also substitute shrimp and they're great.

P.S. Don't forget to try flying fish if you haven't already

Thanks Howard! I plan on trying flying fish! I'll also check out the recipe, although, as I said, we don't see much conch in these parts! :)T & C is where I got hooked on conch. We were there about 16 years ago...before anyone had ever heard of the place.

You might check out Seafood World a Florida company. www.seafood-world.com. Phone 877-276-2722. You can order conch meat as well as fritters and conch chowder. Conch in fla has been quite expensive --about $15/pound--because of hurricanes the past few years. I pay about $4/lb on Provo. You might look for frozen conch in Barbados in the grocery stores. It stays pretty well for a trip home. I use an insulated bag. They do have frozen flying fish in groceries. Frozen conch isn't good for Cerviche or cracked conch but fine for fritters, chowder and conchburgers.

Conch Nut is more like it !!! We made 12 conch burgers yesterday so lots of left overs for dinners.

We just returned from Barbados last week. We found conch fritters at the Coconut Court hotel in Hastings. They were a little well done for my liking but I know they have them there. Have a great time...we sure did!!
