cmcfong has already given you some great suggestions, my favorites for 'local' would be Mad Hatters (tiny place -reservations essential, sit outside if the weather is good), North Rock Brewery (say hi to Doc and Tony for me) and, if you find yourself headed to Smiths parish or the east end of the island near breakfast time, Speciality Inn (diner-style, you're not going for the decor) for breakfast (or pizza). In town, a few blocks back from the main bus terminal, look for '10' - wine bar with small plates (across the road from Master's Hardware). There's a higher-end place called Harry's near Mile's Market that is very nice - patio seating.
There's not so much a 'local' cuisine, as the island is such an eclectic mix of British and Carribean, with lots of expats from all over.

If you like sushi, the restaurants typically purchase daily from the fisherman. Several years ago we went deep sea fishing and all of our catch we didn't want, went to the restaurants. The fisherman (or owners of the boats) deliver directly.

I love seafood and sushi, though I am not knowledgeable about the latter.
(Had a great sushi dinner last night, though, here in Ottawa -- who knew that drab little downtown bldg had a great little Japanese restaurant in it?)
Thanks for all the advice.

Sushi - look for Port O' Call restaurant on Front St -go inside and up the stairs between the bar and restaurant -there's a really good sushi bar called Pearl up there, the kind of place where, if there's something you want that's not on the menu, and they have the ingredients, they'll make it for you. And you can order dessert from the downstairs menu!!

Having just returned from our trip, I can recommend the place we stayed. We rented from Bermuda Getaways:
http://www.bermudagetaway.com/indexBL.html
The listing, called Barrule, is on Harbour Road in Warwick, right by the Darrell's Wharf ferry stop.
Though some parts of the apartment showed signs of wear (principally the '70s kitchen, which could use some de-cluttering) the place was large, comfortable, very clean -- and, to descend to a vulgar vernacular, "classy", in that English-country-house way.
Landline for free local calls; good WiFi connection; safe swimming off the dock; close to ferries (service is intermittent on this line) and buses (frequent); very good food store 5-10 minutes walk away.
Owners, who live upstairs, are faultlessly attentive and extremely hospitable -- even drove us to our chosen restaurant on the first evening.
This is a place for people who 1. want to be independent, 2. don't want or expect room service, 3. are willing to trade off "new and pristine" for "atmospheric" and 4. seek to live like locals.
Price is very fair for what you get.

Welcome home. I have only just learned of the new ferry schedule. Surely they will rethink that decision. It must be very hard on the inns, etc on Harbour Road.
There is a trip report coming, right?

I thought of doing a trip report but I wonder if I have any special expertise, indeed anything to say that has not already been said.
I found your recommendations very helpful and am grateful for all the advice you gave, on this thread and elsewhere, BTW. My knowledge pales beside yours, obviously.
I might do a "top 10" list ....or a set of personal observations/ insights about Bermuda.
(I'm used to posting on Italy and France, countries about wh I feel myself pretty expert. Hence my reluctance)
