Secret Harbour
Considering staying at SH in November.
The reviews are good and the Blue Moon restaurant on-site looks good too. Are there BBQs on-site (in case we bring steaks)? Is there a grocery within walking distance? Are there other restaurant options within walking distance? Do we need to rent a car if our objective is to hit St. John once or twice, but otherwise hang at the resort and eat in a few times too? Thanks! |
I stayed at SH in June. I did not see any BBQs. Nothing is withen walking distance. The entrance to SH is up a pretty steep hill. There is a grocery store in Red Hook and a lot of retaurants there, also. It's about a mile from SH to Red Hook.
If you plan on going to St John, consider renting a vehicle. Make sure that the rental company allows you to take the car to St John. You can hire a taxi in St John to take you wherever. You can also rent a car for the day in St John if any are available. There are several car rental places in St John. You can "google" them to get phone numbers. The people ferry is $5 one way and the car ferry is about $30 one way and the ferries are in Red Hook. |
hi andrew, i love secret harbor and am considering my 4th stay this fall - maybe oct.
some of the units do have small bbq's. all are furnished by owner and some have them and some don't. we always take a cooler (checked luggage) full of all sorts of steaks, chicken, juices, butter, premade appetizers, etc. milk is very expensive - a gal was $6 last trip - but so was a bottle of rum. there is a large grocery about 2 miles before the road out to secret harbor coming from the airport. if you rent a car or take a taxi you will pass it on the left on your way. doesn't look like much from the outside but it has most everything. booze too. the market in red hook is small but has some great deli stuff. you will, as rburgess said, need a car or taxi to get to anything from sh. i advise you get a car for at least part of your stay. there is a lot to see on st. t and i find it much more convenient to come and go when i am ready. the blue moon is very good and the beach bar is a hoot. snorkeling is wonderful off the right end of the beach looking out. another great st.t restaurant is havana blue at the marriott. fabulous food, atmosphere and prices to match. we also liked tony tomano's italian on the road into coki world. |
Robert's restaurant at the Elysian resort next to SH is a fantastic experience. Cowpet Bay is a nice beach at the Elysian also.
One word of warning regarding SH...the iguanas can be very bold. Last year I had one jump on my stomach while I was eating a sandwich on a lounge chair. When I brushed him off, I was scratched pretty deep. Don't wear red around them. Apparently the one that jumped on me was after my can of Coke!!! |
I agree that Roberts is a great restaurant but it is not walkable from SH. It's a short cab ride.

Thanks for all the great information!

Hey Andrew,
You got some pretty good advice already. BTW, Secret Harbour is a great choice. We are heading back down again in another 3 weeks. One other thing to consider about taking a vehicle over to STJ on the ferry.......there has been some inconsistency recently with the car ferry. To be safe, you may want to take the ferry over and just get a taxi to take you where you want to go. If you do decide to take a car over from STT, I am advised by my friends who do so that you should ask the ferry operators in the morning if it is a "good" day to take the car over. And then guide yourself accordingly. Schultz |
