scooter v. car

My husband and I will be in Anguilla for 3 days after spending 4 in St. Martin. We are renting a car in St. Martin, but thought it would be more fun, and a little cheaper to rent scooters in Anguilla. I read it is flat and not too big. What do you think? If car is really the way to go, any rental companies you recommend? Thanks.

Hi Carla,
On most islands, I would not recommend renting a scooter, but Anguilla is quite a bit quieter and laid back.
However, we have found that scooters are not that much cheaper than cars, and it's nice to be able to run the A/C if you want to.
Most of Anguilla is flat, and it's not very big.
I don't think I'd do it dring high season, but I agree it does sound fun.

The trouble with a scooter is that you are absolutely going to fry in the sun. Do your skin a favor, and rent a car.

Just returned from Anguilla and did not see many people on scooters. The ones that did, held up traffic and had a string of cars up their tailpipes(passing is difficult due to the blind turns in the road) even though the speed limit is 40, scooters do not go that fast and its a drive left situation. The roads are 2 lane one each way and lots of big construction trucks going very fast and spilling lots of cement, dirt whatever onto the road as they drive and turn. Also most of the roads are bumpy/dirt or potholed. The nicest section of the road is on the west end, looks new. The place I saw scooter rentals was the 7 to 11 on the main drag. Rent a car, its safer and more comfortable and theres a trunk for your towels and stuff:)We were there 2nd week of November, which is still considered low season and it looked a bit hazardous.

Rent a car, its cooler, and safer. We ride mopeds in Bermuda, as the drivers are use to all the tourists. Anguilla is hotter, much less traffic, but I would be very reluctant to rent one on this island!

A dear friend of mine lives in Barbados - there they refer to scooters as "50 points - the big score", meaning that scooters are what you strike down intentionally ( not really) while driving in your AC car. I was really disappointed as I always had the vision of whisking around on the scooter - she refused to let me be on one as they are considered that unsafe. Then I remembered what people drive like there!!
