We have stayed at both with two kids (1 and 8 at the FS, 3 and 11 on Barbados), and have mixed feelings about both locations.
Nevis: very family friendly, nice beach, but the pool seemed to be the center of the kids' worlds, much as we adults tried to stay on the beach. Nevis is a nice island, but there is not alot going on if you enjoy sightseeing, though I'd recommend going off-resort to visit the old plantation properties. However, a real negative for us was how long it took to travel to Nevis.
Sandy Lane: Stupendous property, beautiful beach (more so than Nevis, but also more crowded.) The pool is also gorgeous at SL. Barbados is a large and varied island with lots of kid-friendly sightseeing, so it is a better bet if you like that sort of thing. On the negative side: Sandy Lane is soooo expensive, we couldn't afford a room as close to the beach as we generally prefer.
Bottom line: after trying both, we moved on to Cap Juluca, which has a much more beautiful beach than either of the above, is equally elegant as the FS (Sandy Lane has a more formal feel) and where all rooms are right on the beach, where we like to be. We've been back 4 times.
