Sandals at Montego Bay?
 

My wife and I are looking for a reasonable place to chill in January for 4 days. Sandals at MB looked like a good deal. We are 48 and just want to relax and chill out for a few days. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Sandals Mobay was the first of the Sandals. Great place to chill but also has a lively vibe and an extraordinary amount of things going on. It would make a good escape for you. You couldn't ask for better service. It's on Jamaica's largest private white sand beach and has the highest repeat business of any of the sandals - I think because it's only five minutes from the airport.

Friends of mine who have stayed at this Sandals said it was OK, not great, but were very disturbed by the amount of airplane noise overhead. If that doesn't bother you, go for it. OR... if you're willing, jump in a car, and take a ride for a little over an hour to Negril, where the beach is at least ten times better than anything in Mobay. There are tons of reasonable accommodations on the beach, (Coco La Palm, Charela Inn, Idle Awhile, Rondel Village, all on the beach) and food is pretty cheap.

We learned that yes you do hear the planes on the first day, but you literally don't hear them after that. We live in the country on a quiet lake and the nearest main road is a distance from us. Trust me - you can hear a pin drop here and we would not have stayed if it bothered us! It was great to not have to do a big drive after arriving at the airport. It is a 50 mile drive to Negril and usually takes two hours but could be more or less depending on traffic conditions. Plus the food is the best of all the Sandals.

Not to be disagreeable so soon after the holidays, but Negril is definitely not a two hour drive from Montego Bay unless you hit really horrible ( and unusual) traffic. Plus, it's a beautiful ride once you get out of Mobay- past some of the most gorgeous coastline in Jamaica.

Well, the best way to settle this is to check out what other websites say, so...

Frommer's says it's 2 hours
Virtual Tourist says it's 1.5 hours
All Jamaica.com says 2 hours
WikiAnswers says 1 hour
Trip Advisor says 90 minutes
Other Fodor's say 75 - 90 minutes

So, take your pick:).

Nor really. Since most of those answers are simply incorrect.

I was there in July this year and did the trip & timed it both directions. It took almost exactly 90 mins. each time. Not saying you couldn't hit traffic or construction and be delayed but the trip is typically NOT 2 hrs. and NO way could you make it in 1 hr. Period.

I've been going to Negril since 1982, and even in our first trips, before the new faster road was built, it didn't take two hours unless we stopped to have a Red Stripe!

Sorry Knowing, but all that lists proves is you can't believe everything you read on the internet!

Right, it does. It normally takes 90 mins. Like we keep saying.

You're right, Knowing. My only reason in suggesting it to the OP is that the beach is so much nicer than any of the beaches in MoBay. And Negril is generally so much nicer/more interesting than MoBay, but all of that's up to the OP.
