San Juan or Cancun
 

I have air & hotel at either of these locations. Hotels are: San Juan Marriott Stella Maris and in Cancun it would be JW Marriott or Casa Magna Marriott. I would like to hear comments on which destination is preferred for a family with 2 kids (13 & 10)for a 4-5 day getaway possibly over Thanksgiving. I've only been to SJU on a cruise for the day..was not overly impressed however, did not get to the beaches only into the city..fort, etc. Which would be the most economical for dining & water activities? Probably would just hang out on beach & at hotel pool. Casino in SJU not a big interest. I am thinking Cancun hotels are nicer but is Cancun itself too "spring break-ish"? How are beaches in SJU?

If you think you would just hang out at the resort and on the beach, run - don't walk - to get reservations at the JW Marriott in Cancun.

That is one of the three top hotels in Cancun, and is VERY nice.

There is a lot to do and see close by, and the beach at Cancun is far nicer than those in and close to San Juan.

Just got back from Mexico last month, and with the peso at 10/1, costs are very reasonable right now.

I've never been to Cancun but have spent a week over in Puerto Rico. It was a convention so I didn't have too much extra time. What I do remember were the beaches were clean (unlike downtown San Juan) but there was always such a deep drop off and under tow at the beaches that no one ever went into the water.

I don't think Thanksgiving is a big party time for college kids so I am guessing it would be a nice time to visit Cancun.

I'm not sure where Mariann was but the Marriott is in Condado and I've always seen people in the ocean. That being said, the JW Marriott is going to be a nicer hotel than the San Juan Marriott. Plus, it doesn't sound like you are very interested in nightlife (what with 2 kids). With that in mind, i think Cancun would be a better choice. If you choose Cancun and can stay in either the JW or Casa Magna - pick the JW.

I would go for Cancun. Been there 5 times and stayed at the Casa Magna the first time. It's a beautiful hotel. The JW is also gorgeous with a really great spa! I haven't been to San Juan but haven't heard many great reviews from people that has visited. The beach is great in Cancun with waves that your kids will love with a boogie board.
