Safest islands in the Caribbean?
I just read a lengthy thread about crime in St. Maarten and before that I hadn't considered crime in the Caribbean at all. What are the safest islands for a family vacation? I don't want to stay at an all inclusive 24x7 (or at all really). I want to explore, hike, poke around towns, rent a car and drive all over, etc. I know that there's crime everywhere, and one needs to be aware of their surroundings, etc etc. I've traveled a lot but traveling with a child changes the game a bit. Thanks for your input!

The truth is most of the islands in the Caribbean are "safe". That said, add the following to the ones already mentioned:
Just about all of the Bahamas Out-islands (there are hundreds)
Any of the Turks & Caicos
All of the BVI's, especially Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and Guana islands
Anguilla
Saba
St. Eustatius
St. Kitts
Nevis
Grenada
Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic)
