Safest Island
 

I think I know the answer already, but which is the safest island in the Caribbean?

Most are pretty safe once you don't forget your common sense at home.

We have been to Anguilla, Aruba, and Turks and Caicos, and we felt safe on each one.

Without a doubt, Cuba would be the safest island. It has a far lower crime rate than many other islands and Cuban/tourist crime is very low. Maybe because the penalties are so high!

Any of the outislands of the Bahamas would be very safe. Harbour Island would probably be at the top of that list, as would Cat Island, The Abacos, Eleuthera and Long Island.

My wife and I have been going to the Caribbean for a number of years and would rank the following as some of the 'safest' islands.

Grenada, Provo (Turks and Caicos, Tortola (British Virgin Islands), St. Kitts, Curacao, and Cuba.

Notwithstanding the above, we did not feel 'unsafe' in Jamaica, St. Martin, St. Thomas, nor Aruba.

I was assuming you were referring to crime, of course...if you were referring to volcanic activity then Montserrat while safe, if probably the least safe...lol

Interesting. I was going to plug for St Barts.

Don't believe a tourist has ever been mugged or scammed and teenage girls are safe to hitch-hike.

Palm Island is a very safe bet.

I live on St. Eustatius and never take my keys out of my car at any place on the island, nor do I lock my house.

I can go out walking before daylight or very late at night by myself, even in desolate areas, and not think a thing about it.

And, I love it. :)

Saba has to be as safe as any other island!

I will agree with you there, Howard. I was just there again a few weeks ago and Saba is even safer than Statia. :)

It's great that you can comfortably leave your house unlocked.
But leaving the keys in the car -- wouldn't it be diffcult to hide a stolen car on a small island and difficult to ship it out?

Yes, marigold, that is precisely why it's not a problem here. We have had friends whose vehicles have been taken at night for a joyride, but they are always brought back. The only reason they knew it was taken was because it was parked in a different spot! :)

It's also not uncommon for my jeep to be parked in someone's way at some point for loading / unloading goods and they simply get in and move it to a different spot without bothering me to do so, since the keys are in it anyhow.

That was all quite strange to get used to when we first moved here with having come from such a big city in the States.

We just returned from Vieques PR and it was safe.

Virgin Gorda in the BVI's

The Golden Rock Plantation Inn on Nevis is the most dangerous place to visit. Whilst journeying in the tropical path by GRP, I was hit by mushy, flying mangoes, flung at me from the treetops by a few baby green monkeys. Then, I was pick-pocketed by Pam's pet parrot, who would fly into our room and steal all shiny objects from our desktop: coins, keys, etc. Finally found them in a makeshift nest the parrot constructed in a palm tree hole 3 feet off the ground. I laid low and watched the pillager enter our room, hit the desktop, and return to his tree hole with a beak full of shiny chewing gum wrappers. Oh, peeping toms are on Nevis as well. My wife and I couldn't take a shower w/o the parrot peering in the shower room window. Yes, the Caribbean isles are full of crime. Robert59
