Safe in Cancun? What to see there?

Will I feel safe if we venture into the city away from the hotel zone? What are attractions we should not miss while there?

Cancun is very safe, take the bus downtown to the shopping area. Just make sure to stay in a group. The shopping area does go back quite a ways, but the farther back you go, the better deals you will get. One of the better trips to take in Cancun is the Jungle Tour, you get to take either a two seater jet ski, or a jet boat through the jungle and then you go snorkeling for about $25US. Most of the trips are similar, either beach and snorkeling or ruins, it just depends what you are looking for.

I have a time share in CanCun and have been many times. It is very safe and enjoyable (the locals seem to watch out for the tourists). There is a small ruin on the Island, that is free on sundays. If you have kids, they'll love the 3 and 4 foot lizards running around on the ruins. XCaret is a really nice state park, that has a small zoo, underground river to snorkel down, beach, dolphin shows, swimming with the dolphins, and a beach. There are several 1/2 day and full day trips to the location. All of the beaches in CanCun are public. Some of the best local snorkeling is behind Club Med. You can snorkel there for free, as long as you don't use any of the Club Med facilities. Day trips to Chitza Nitza, Telum, and Xell Ha (pronounced Shell Ha) are also great. Stay away from COBA unless you wan a really grooling trip (lots of walking through the jungle). The also recently opened a Wet & Wild water park near the airport. There are 3 or 4 golf courses if you enjoy golf. Several all inclusive booze cruises (transportation, food, drinks, & a show) are also available. The water in the city of CanCun is treated and safe to drink. You can always drink sodas if you want.

The day trip to Isla Mujeres was very nice for about $27 you get the boat trip to the island which makes two stops. The first is to an area where you can snorkel, take some sun, or hike a few minutes to some ruins on the cliffs which offer amazing views.
I would also really recommend X-Caret, about $50 per person, no lunch. It may sound a bit steep, but if you're interested in Maya history, natural beauty,or
a incredible show, TAKE THIS TRIP! You'll think it was worth every penny.

about Cancun...be sure to see the Ballet Folkloria, which includes abut 3 hours of excellent dancing and singing and a meal. We enjoyed it alot. Cancun is expensive, and not very Mexican, so if you want to experience Mexico, go into town, be sure to be careful about what you eat, and learn a little Spainish, will enhance your experience a great deal.
