S. Caribbean cruise in 2 wks, need advice
All,
My husband and I have a southern caribbean cruise in two weeks. Need some advice on the "must see's" for each port so we are sure to not miss the best of each port. Itinerary is san juan, st thomas/st john, tortola/virgin gorda, dominica, martinique, barbados, st kitts. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Wow! What a terrific itinerary!

Of all your destinations, the only one I've visited is St. Thomas. Good shopping in the main city; Bolongo Bay has a nice day sail to St. John on the Heavenly Days (we had several cruisers on our sail, so some of the lines do this as an excursion).

Magen's Bay is beautiful, but once you're there, it's a very pretty beach with alot of tourists.

Check out a store near the cruise ship docks called Amsterdam Sauer. They have these hand-carved birds (and animals) out of minerals and semi-precious stones. Just gorgeous! Fun to go in and just look.

Enjoy! Sounds like a terrific way to get a taste of several islands!

You didn't say how long you'd be in port but no matter how short that walk looks into Charlotte Amalie (if you are docking there), do not do it! Well worth a taxi fare instead of a very long hot walk! There are some interesting historical sites in Town as well as the duty free shopping. Or you could choose to beach it. Your ship will probably offer tours, vists to Magen's Bay (one of the prettiest beaches in the Caribb, they say) and Coki Beach (Coral World and snokling). There is a sub ride, a lift to the top of Paradise Point with great views and excellent Island drinks! You can hire your own taxi and do a couple of hours of touring, combined with lunch (in Town if shopping, Cuzzin's has great "local" cuisine) and beach it awhile either on St. Thomas or if you have time, head to St. John where the beaches are wonderful! Sapphire and Secret Harbour are great beaches and don't get hit with the crowds. Or, you could do a great half day or full day snorkle sail to some beaches unaccessable by land! Good site to check out for info is www.vinow.com
Am sure that your ship will offer Cane Garden Bay or Smuggler's on Tortola. Smugglers is more remote. Or you can head to the Baths on Virgin Gorda. When you get there have someone point you to the trail to Devil's Bay. Same scenery but fewer people!

Barbados has a wonderful shopping area or just take a tour of the island - very colorful little towns with an English flavor. Also, I've always enjoyed a catamarran cruise that are usually offered at some of the ports. In San Juan, you can see the rainforest or tour the Bacardi rum factory (that's fun!). Also if you are there in the evening, see one of the great nightclub shows.

In Dominica, you'll like just about any tour offered, because the island is gorgeous. We took one that went to a small botanical garden, then on through banana planatations and to the rainforest/waterfalls. It's a lush, beautiful island. Roseau, where the cruise ships dock, is very poor.

In Martinique, take a tour to St. Pierre, the former "capital" obliterated by a volcanic eruption years ago. It's a scenic and relaxing place, and a more pleasant way to spend the day vs. walking around Fort de France.
