Running on St. John
Having visited St. John previously I realize the roads are not conducive to running. Does anyone have any suggestions for some safe running (hoping to get in 6 -8 mile runs while there). We will be on the island during a busy vacation week.
Are any of the National Park trails good for running? Could one run from Lameshur to Reef Bay as an example? Where do all of the "8 Tuff Miles" runners train on the island? |
There is a loop around Maho that isn't too bad. I have seen trail runners on some of the trails. I believe some of the St Johnians run the 8 Tuff route. You just have to be REAL cautious, because the drivers aren't! Some 8 Tuffers live on St Thomas and train there.;-)

Thank you eastenderusvi.
Is the loop around Maho on the road or trail? I can't believe some of the 8 Tuff runners run that course with the roads open. I wouldn't even think of running North Shore or Centerline Roads. I know how bad I drive when I'm down there--and I consider myself a good driver (at home that is). We actually leave the island the day before the 8 Tuff Race. Too bad I would have liked to have done it or at least been a spectator. Thanks again. |
The Maho loop is on a road. There are a lot of runners who will be on St John in the days leading up to the race. There are "tune-ups" which take place on the course, the last one will be February 8. There is also a local running club, the St John Landsharks. Good luck finding a place to run!
