Runaway Hill Trip Report
Summer 2007
Harbour Island: Runaway Hill My husband and I arrived at Runaway Hill on Harbour Island to be greeted by a teddy bear of a guy, Steve, with rum drinks in hand for my husband an I. Steve (co-owner) gave us a tour of the quaint property that was filled with charm and an impressive view of the stunningly blue ocean and sugar-white sand. We have been to Cap Juluca (Anguilla) and Caneel Bay (St. John) and this beach won 1st place for its stunning beauty, length (2 miles long- enjoyed the walks and viewing the homes of Elle McPherson and the like) and soft texture. Our room was Alice Emily- I recommend this room as it has an ocean view, & is adjacent to the house for convenience. Runaway Hill is setup with an Honor Bar, thus you aren't served drinks, you mix them yourself and write down what you have daily. Some might be accustomed to being "served", and if so, this might not be for you. We actually welcomed the feeling of ownership and at times it seemed as though we'd rented the whole place for ourselves. There are many wonderful restaurants to try, and we had our favorite dinners at: The Rock House (hands down, our fave) and The Landing. Runaway Hill had a nice dinner, but the original cook retired. A drink or meal at the Blue Bar at Pink Sands is a must. Make sure to venture out from Runaway Hill (though it is tempting to not!) on a golf cart and explore the rest of the island and other resorts. We actually visited most all of the others to see if we'd want to try a different spot next time, but the others were larger with more people, and we had grown spoiled in our little paradise that we pretty much had all to ourselves.Overall, fabulous trip and cannot wait to return! Thanks for the trip report. Love the pics, especially the beach. Looks just beautiful. We'll be on Eleuthera this summer and plan to spend a day on Harbour Island.
|
Lucky you! Would love your report(where to stay, etc) when you get back as we didn't get a chance to do Eleuthera, but would like to next time. The word is out that there will be a direct flight from Atlanta to North Eleuthera very soon, so we all need to go and enjoy before everyone else finds out!

I also meant to add that for a fantastic breakfast, Arthur's is a must. They also offer lunch...with homemade breads (coconut bread is their specialty) and desserts. It is located in town on Harbour Island and relatively inexpensive.

Thanks for your report, Lura. We were at Runaway Hill a few years ago, I think it was, and LOVED it! This was before the change of ownership and the updates that I see in your photographs. It needed some sprucing up!
Love that beach. Love the location and the very few people you share that beach with. And, yes, get a golf cart and enjoy the entire island. It remains one of our favorite places. |
Pink Sand, it's Pink Sands, lol.
I am so glad you had a great time. I have been going to HI since the 80's and just love it there. Great food, amazing people and even more amazing beach. |
How lovely Laura! Thanks for sharing your photos.
May I ask you what Golf Cart company you used and how much did it cost? Also, how did you get into Harbour Island? Did you take the Fast Ferry from Nassau or did you fly directly into Eleuthra? |
If you are going to the island soon, ask your hotel to get a golf cart for you, and depending on where you are staying on island, you may not even want or need one. You might like to have one to see the whole island for a day. The southern end of the island is the Marina, and there is a lovely bar and I think restaurant there now.

Lura, great pix and trip report. We are going next month. I particularly loved the horse pictures. I have a friend here in Fla., with the exact name "Lura", I had never heard before! Were those the Blue bar pix?
|
JagGirl, we did rent a golf cart for 2 days to explore the rest of the island. The rental we used was right across the street from where the Ferry's come in. I belive it was $40 or $50 per day. We flew directly to Eleuthera and then caught a short ferry from the airport over to Harbour Island.
Karitannis, have a wonderful time next month- yes, the photo is from the Blue Bar. |
