royal st. lucian or windjammer?

Royal St. Lucian is a very American-style hotel. Three stories, rectangular rooms in a courtyard layout, most rooms do not face the beach.

Windjammer consists of a series of villas on the cliffs. Very pretty, but it is an enormous resort, and you need to take shuttles to get to the beach.

I have stayed at the Royal and it is OK. Service is excellent, great location. Downside is that the beach, albeit large, is very public, and the feel of the resort is not very Caribbean. You could be anywhere.

Heard really bad reports on Windjammer on our last trip back from St. Lucia. Guests there had a host of complaints and were very disappointed.
Hi,
Unfortunately I am hesitant at posting this...but honsetly, my 28 day stay on St lucia was not a very good one. There is more bad to say for this island, and it reputations, than good. Seriously consider ANOTHER island, unless you are sure you really want ST. LUCIA!

lara,

Thank you so much for the help. Do you recommend another hotel in St. Lucia? We are also looking into the Anse Chastanet and Ladera, but they are SO expensive...is it worth it? Thanks again!

Elizabeth

Anton: really? what happened during your stay that made it so unpleasant? where where you staying while you were there? and what other island would recommend? we are interested in st. lucia because it seems to have a good mix of the things we're looking for: hiking, rainforest, the volcano is a nice plus, not to mention the beach. although we don't want to lay around on the beach all day.

I can say that I had anice stay at The Windjammer. This guy Anton must have had a terrible experience. Maybe 28 days was too long on any island. There were many children there but we were there during Easter break. I didn't really mind. The resort itself was very pretty and the people who worked there were very accomodating. I think the island itself leaves a little to be desired. i have been to several islands and this was my least favorite. Very primitive and it seem like a lot of poverty in the main cities. I wouldn't rent a car if you paid me. We had one for a day and quickly returned it. All in all anyone who goes to Windjammer should be happy to be on vacation in a lovely setting.

Sorry, I have not stayed at either Ladera nor AC. We have stayed at LeSport twice (once for free) and is quite nice if you want to do an all-inclusive.
In posting after posting, "Anton complains about St.Lucia. In one he says he could only stay 9 days in l993 it was so bad. Then he signs on for 28 days (when??) and complains again. He advises us not to go to St.Lucia. Why has he returned at least twice and for a fairly long time? Something does not make sense.

I am planning on going in April and staying at the Windjammer. I hope things are not as bad as "Anton" has pictured them. We are determined to have a nice time. I am concerned from some of the postings about Windjammer. Some of the postings have also said good things. Heres hoping!!!
Joyce

I just got back from a stay at Windjammer Landing with my wife and two young daughters (ages 4 and 2), and I can say that we had a great time. I was a little concerned after reading some of these postings that we had made a mistake, but I was pleasantly suprised.

We found the Windjammer to be a fine place for a family vacation. I don't know anything about royal St. Lucian, but we did run into a couple that had stayed at Club St. Lucia for about 3 hours and found the place to be so discusting that they transferred to Windjammer. They also found the Windjammer to be very nice.

Enjoy your trip.

We've also just returned from St.Lucia. Stayed at the Windjammer and loved it there. Originally, we booked a two bedroom villa but switched to a deluxe suite o/v after looking at the villa which did seem a little worn.
Our room was very nice. Robes were laid out, a plate of fresh fruit and bottled water in the ref. coffee or tea ready to go. French doors opened onto a patio with table, chairs flowers and hummingbirds. Upstairs, another balcony with chaises. Maids were there everyday and came for turn down in the evening if you wished.
Everyone was warm and friendly and requests promptly handled. The beach is 'short' but long and clean.
Windjammer is very pretty and grounds are well-kept.
As for shuttles, we had no problems and we are 60 and 70 with hip replacements. Even walked down the lovely pathways many times.
As you can tell, we (two couples) loved Windjammer. We also were apprehensive after reading neg. postings, but all decided we had made a wise choice. It's so pretty there. We went all/inclusive first time. Probably good for us because we drank a lot of cokes, etc. and everything is fairly expensive. Although it tends to seem more so when priced in EC.
Saw many other resorts, which are along the road like Sandals, Wyndham, Royal SL, etc. Windjammer sits back in further. Our cab driver said Royal was very nice American style. Wyndham appeared to be three big buildings motel syle.?
The south of St.Lucia is not to be missed. I think it would be very nice to stay there. Although for this trip, we enjoyed Windjammer.

Elizabeth: Yes, Ladera is worth it! We were there for a week last November and it was fantastic and worth every penny. We stayed in a regular suite with plunge pool which was the next-to-least expensive option, and our room was incredible. The views from the rooms have to be seen to be believed, plus great food and service. I can't imagine why anyone would want to stay in the northern part of the island; the southern part is much more beautiful. Anse Chastanet and Jalousie Hilton seemed lovely also from our experience on their beaches, although we didn't see the rooms. We loved our trip to St. Lucia -- I think Anton's experience was an aberration. By all means, go to St. Lucia.

Just got back from St.Lucia 5/99.
Stayed one night at the Royal St. Lucian & switched to the Windjammer.
The Royal is sandwiched between a sting of hotels and its grounds are about 200 feet from the road behind it to the beach. The road was disgusting with garbage all along it & the beach is TOO public. Not very Caribbean seeming at all.
Windjammer had a lovely beach a much more private feel. We were SO glad to have switched.
