Where do i fly into for the Riverra Maya?
I'll be coming from Saint Louis,and want to
find someplace not too pricy, maybe rent a car and travel around staying at someplace different every day or two, I'm just an ol country boy and don't need anything fancy.
Any of you wild& crazy people have some ideas?

As for where to fly into, Cancun is by far the easiest, and probably the cheapest. Rent a car or hop on a bus and head south.

No. The Caribbean forum shis fine to post your question as the location is in the Caribbean. I agree that Cancun would be the best way to arrive from St. Louis.

I've stayed in the area many times. If you don't want to pay the high prices and you don't need anything fancy, check out Villa Maya Bungalows in Akumal (about 60 miles south of Cancun). You can easily catch a cab from the nearby market area and go anywhere you like. No need to rent a car unless you just want to. Walk to beach restaurant, grocery store, and quaint shops.

Fly into Cancun. Spend your first night or two in Akumal. Continue on to Playa del Carmen for a couple of nights at Hotel Basico or Hotel del Seo. Drive past Tulum to Zamas and spend the majority of your time there. Advice for good ol country boyz is tough (y'all sure you don wan spend your vacation cuttin brush now?). This is a good mix that will open your horizons.

Rent a car (relatively cheap) and gives you mobility and cheaper than taxi and get out of Cancun as fast you can.
You'll want to explore COBA , a half hour off the main, en route (a half day
detour and well worth it), XEL-HA area for snorkelling in inland lagoons (if touristy, great fun), a quick stop off at TULUM earliest in am you can get there before the tour buses pull in -- and then on past TULUM to relatively cheap digs,good food/great beaches, simplicity, tho it's far more developed
than you might think. If you can make it as far down as CHETUMAL, it's a trek.
ZAMAS is laid back, unpretentious.

Is there a main highway that runs along the entire Rivera?
I also dive and understand there is some outstanding diving along the way.
I also posted a message regarding Margarita Island venezuela,i was there in jan. of 05 and really enjoyed it, was wondering if anyone out there has been there lately,its on my list for this winter.

Vetteman:It's one (1) main road with
sidetracks off on seaside to the more
obscure beach places and a macadam road to COBA. There are diving/scuba people
in AKUMAL thru whatever hotel you choose and also via ZAMAS to link up with in advance for certified divers.
Snorkelling at XEL-HA is quite good if you go early to avoid tour buses and flotillas of motor homes. Playa del Carmen will be the most developed area but the 2 hotels listed above and hip, fun, young and a good contrast to Akumal/Zamas. Just don't drive at night.
