Rincon, Puerto Rico
 

We are thinking of going to Rincon next week but we are worried that the beach will be very rough. It seems like a surfing place. Does that mean the water isn't nice for swimming or snorking? Also, does anyone know anything about the Rincon Beach Resort? Thanks so much.<BR><BR>PS - if anyone has any other ideas of where to go in PR, let us know.

It seems a little late to be making travel plans for the holiday week. A while back I read some positive comments here about the Rincon Beach Resort. I think I read that there are some nice beaches on that side of the island. <BR><BR>Good luck with your plans!

Rincon juts out of Puerto Rico's west coast at a point called 'Punta Higuera'. During Winter months the beaches just immediately South, and all beaches North of this point are considered of the surfing kind with fairly rough conditions (perfect for surfing...). These same beaches are very mild and swimmable during the Summer months however. Beaches to the South like Corcega, Barrero, and Almirante (where the Rincon Beach Resort is located) are quite mild all year, unless a 'vaquada a.k.a. low pressure system' comes around to stir things up a little for a few days. If you plan your vacation around these beaches, you'll have a good time any time of the year.

As a surfer and a diver, I can tell you that there are certain times of the year that the ocean is a little stirred up. Sure, Rincon is known for it's winter surf season, just like the guy in the previous post mentioned. The southern Rincon beaches are excellent any given time of the year. The surf beaches are great for swimming, snorkelling, and scuba from about Apr to Aug with the periodic swell during the late hurricane season.

Remember because the surf in Rincon are of the coral reef type of break, when the wave action does finally calm down, you will see lots of pretty fish.

But please do not touch, step on, break or take home any corals, it is illegal (at the U.S. Federal level).
