Ridiculous Airfare to Virgin Gorda
 

So for some time now we have been trying to book our July 2016 honeymoon to Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda. We live in Houston. The destination and resort look wonderful. I have frequented many of the Caribbean so going to the BVI is encouraging, except one thing, AIRFARE. I have found the airlines in the past two years to be acting more like price fixing monopolies than free market companies but that is another matter. Trying to find even reasonable airfare to the BVI is near impossible. When I saw reasonable I mean both time, stops, and price. Flying directly into VG is a no go as it will involve 2 stops and the tickets start at $1,600. Our other options are flying into Tortola and taking a ferry or flying into St. Thomas and taking a ferry. The Tortola option would seem like the best choice but really it isnt. They are offering tickets in the $900 range right now but that includes 2 stops + a ferry ride. If you want to go down to 1 stop then the price jacks up into the $1700-$2000 range. We have a decent budget and I could afford to pay the $1700 if I had to. But it is the principle of the matter. I could fly to Australia for $2,000. This is just a case of the airlines price gouging. I have also noticed when I check the prices of tickets at my office they are lower than when I check at home. This is probably due to the many searches I have done the past few months. Many believe the airline pricing models now use software to track cookies and IP addresses to charge people based on their location, searches, etc. I am thoroughly defeated.

It's always been a little difficult to get to Virgin Gorda from the US but I think you can do better than $1,600 to $2,000 for airfare.

I did a quick check and found R/T non-stop flights (in July) on United from Houston to SJU for $620. From there you can take either Cape Air or Air Sunshine to Virgin Gorda - R/T airfare on those flights are $460 and $325 respectively. That comes to between $955 and $1,080 R/T.

You could also try routing yourself through St. Thomas - I found non-stop flights on United starting at $639. From there you can connect to Air Sunshine to reach VG for $250 R/T. that comes to $889 R/T.

The question of airfare to Virgin Gorda in July may be moot - Little Dix Bay is closing for major renovations on May 1. The project is scheduled to take 18 months.

Thank you so much for the input! You always have pretty insightful advice. I just checked their website and you are right about the renovations. I am so glad we waited and did not book our airfare! But now we are back to square one. So now its either time to find another Caribbean island or Hawaii. If you have any other suggestions besides VG then I am all ears.

Check out resorts on Grand Cayman - United has 3 hour non-stop R/T flights from Houston for under $600/PP.

Spice island resort on Grenada is wonderful. We were there several years ago and loved it. You might want to check it out.
